THIS SITE IS CONSTANTLY UNDER RECONSTRUCTION!

The Effective Web Site

Some say that one's Web site should be cool,

have lots of pictures, include sound and animation and be in a constant state of change.

|Worst of the Web| |Useless Pages|

Others say that a Web site should be useful, be designed with a real purpose in mind, should work quickly and should enable visitors to find what they are looking for readily.

So Here It Is, Straight From The Horse's Mouth

Think useful. Always use an Index.html file. Stay a couple of steps behind the latest innovation. Multimedia and plug-ins are more trouble than they are worth. Fix the basic structure and stick with it. Provide different ways to find things. Make sure page titles make sense. Don’t overwhelm the visitor. Lead the visitor. Make it easy to move around. Speed up access by reducing images. Add text links near the top. Include ALT text. Use height and width tags. Interlace images. Reuse images. Use several small images instead of lots of big ones. Use fewer colors. Use thumbnails. Don’t put text in graphics. Don’t pretend you’re an artist. Use straight forward and understandable language. Be careful with links. Tell the visitor what to do. Create a footer. Include contact information. Always include a visitor counter. Spell-check and edit. Be careful with frames. Test your site. Change your video mode. Cater to foreign audiences. Rules exist to be broken, but you must know what your are doing.
