Chapter Eight

“ Look, before anything is said and done, I need you to answer one question,” Nick said as Morgan got into the cab. She gave the driver the address before turning back to Nick. “ Where’s Amelia?” He asked. “ That’s your big question?” Morgan mused dryly. “ No, it’s just she’s not with you-...” “ I am sitting with a genius,” She muttered. “ I left her with a friend,” “ Ok. Back to my question. Is Amelia really Jake’s?” Morgan stared at Nick, wanting to tell him but afraid of his response. “ Morgan, I’m not screwing around, I need to know,” “...Why? Would it make a difference, Nick? Would it change the way things are between us?” She asked bitterly. “ Morgan, if you had said anything- if it is my kid- you know I would have taken responsibilty,” He argued, getting frustrated. “ Why in the Hell do you think I would have left?” Morgan stared out of the window, ignoring his question. “ You beat me to it if I had it in my mind at all,” He muttered. The rest of the ride was silent until they reached the coffee shop. Morgan led the way inside and they sat down at a booth. Morgan looked at Nick after they orderd. “ Yeah, Nick...She’s your’s. Are you happy?” She said, her voice firm but her eyes showing something different. “...How could you have the heart not to tell me?” He demanded, his eyes turning cold. “ Nick-,” “ Go ahead, give me an excuse...” Her comment died on her lips and she was silent again. “ Does Jake know?” “ That it’s not his kid, but not that it’s yours,” He sighed and looked out the window. “ I’m sorry, Nick,” She half whispered a minute later, watching him. “ So am I, that night was nothing more than a mistake and this is the first time I am actually regretting it,” The waiter brought their food and left. “ So where does this put us?” Morgan asked as Nick took a sip of his drink. “ Us? Nowhere. I would have liked to have been there for you but you left. I would have liked to be in your daughter’s life but that’s obviously out of the question,” He gave a bitter chuckle. “ Why? Why is it out of the question?” “ Because, Morgan. You don’t have any feelings for me, you are in a serious relationship, everyone here thinks Amelia is Jake’s child-” “ We could leave. We could move to Florida or somewhere else, Nick,” Morgan said desperatly. Nick shook his head. “ No, we can’t. I do not intend on cutting off your ties with your family and the only father Amelia has know. I can’t trust you anymore, Morgan.” “ Nick, I’m sor-” “ Please don’t say that, Mor. It’s not going to change anything,” He reluctantly picked up his spoon and dipped it in his bowl of soup. “ Why are you doing this, Nick?” She asked, getting sick of his matter-of-fact way of talking. “ Because, it’s the same thing you were doing when you left,” “ So? This is your child’s future we are talking about!” “ Then why did you leave? Why did you lie to me? Don’t expect me to feel bad for you, Morgan. I pity you for having to resort to such cheap measures,” He spat out angrily, his soup forgotten. “ What was I supposed to do? Who knew if you would have stayed, Nick? We made promises we didn’t think about! We didn’t even know each other that well,” She reasoned. “ Morgan. listen to me,whatever future we might have been able to have doesn’t exist anymore. You have a great boyfriend who is willing to marry you, a beautiful daughter, and family. You don’t need me in your life. I was never a good thing for you. Just focus on you and Jake, allright?” He started eating his soup and she just looked at him, knowing now that he wasn’t going to bugde on his response. “ When are you leaving?” “ Next thursday,” He answered, glancing at her. “ Nothing in the world is going to change your mind, is it?” She asked softly, looking crestfallen as her gaze moved down to the tabletop. “...Honestly? Anything can happen. You of all people should realize that,” “ What do you mean? You just said-...” “ I’m saying I can’t control fate and predetermined destiny. Maybe we were meant to be,” He shrugged. “ I am leaving next Thursday though, Morgan. I don’t think anything can change that. Aren’t you hungry?” She looked down at her salad and started picking at it, thinking about what little time they had left together...
