***** Morgan woke up with a start, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her heart was racing and she was covered in perspiration. Her dream replayed itself vividly in her mind and her thoughts distorted, she grabbed the phone and dialed Nick’s cell phone number. She waited impatiently as the phone rang endlessly, unable to stop the tears from falling. “ Hello?” His voice came out groggily to her and she exhaled a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “ Nick?” SHe asked tearfully, her voice clouded with relief. “ Morgan? What’s wrong? Are you ok?” He asked quickly, sounding wide awake now. “ Oh, God. I had this crazy dream-...You and Amelia-” She tried swallowing down the lump in her throat but was unable to. “ Mor, you’re not making any sense, Hon. It’s nearly two in the morning. Why don’t you get some sleep?” “ I can’t,” She cried, trying to get a hold of herself. Maybe it was something in her voice that made Nick hesitate. “ Morgan? Do you want me to come over?” He asked apprehensively, wanting more than anything to just hold her. “ Yeah,” She nodded, forgetting that he couldn’t see her. “ Ok, fine. I’ll be over soon.” “ Ok, thanks,” She hung up and was quickly enclosed in the darkness that filled up the night. She sat for a good twenty minutes, crying softly into her pillow, not just crying about her dream anymore, but about the whole hopelessness of the situation she was in. Remembering that Angela and Todd were home, she made her way downstairs and slipped on her coat before going to sit on the porch and wait for Nick. He showed up after five minutes and parked Gabrial’s car. He walked swiflty to where she was sitting, his eyes full of concern. “ Mor-,” “ Let’s go upstairs, Angie and Todd are asleep,” She said to him softly, her voice still sounding unstable. He followed her wordlessly to her room and hesitated by the door before walking in. Morgan sat down on the bed, shivering and Nick emulated her acions and sat down next to her. “ What’s happened?” He asked, peering intently at her in the obscurity. “ I had this...It sounds stupid now,” Her eyes filled up with miserable tears again and Nick waited. “ I had this dream of you and Amelia...” “ What happened in the dream?” “ You guys got into a plane crash and it was terrible because I was left alone again,” She whispered, her lip trembling. She gave him a vivid recount of her dream and he listened, more intent on the color her eyes looked in the moonlight than on what she was saying. Before he realized what was happening, his lips met hers in the patch of moonlight shining on them. She responded and he wrapped his arms around her, thinking about how good it felt to have her in his arms again. Flashes of deja vu filled them as history repeated itself and they threw caution and uneasiness to the wind...
So faithfully Holding tight to every dream I thought our love would ever be As the scent of hope slips through my fingers, plain for me to see I can feel now in your eyes the changing way you look at me Where's the love we knew would last us eternally And will your arms still hold me And your eyes console me Baby, please don't turn your back and just pretend That your heart still needs me And your soul completes me Can we find a way to fall in love again It's hard for you When your heart has opened up to feelings that you never knew Never thinking that you'd doubt our love you don't know what to do I'd give anything, my heart, my soul if I could pull you through Just to find again my love we hold so true And will your arms still hold me And your eyes console me Baby, please don't turn your back and just pretend That your heart still needs me And your soul completes me Can we find a way to fall in love again And as every night goes by With every lonely tear I cry It's So clear to me I need you by my side And will your arms still hold me And your eyes console me Baby, please don't turn your back and just pretend Oh, that your heart still needs me And your soul completes me Can we find a way to fall in love again Can we find a way to fall in love again Oh baby, I need you to love me For the rest of my life If we fall in love again
***** Nick lay awake two hours later, staring out of the window as the events of the previous hours filled him with confusion and doubt. Where in the hell did they stand now? He looked over at Morgan next to him and sighed, wishing he could fall asleep as easily as she could. How simple it seemed for her to just push away what might the future might bring for her and her daughter. It was her with everything to lose and yet, he was lying awake, pondering over what might happen next. She stirred and opened her eyes. “ Why are you still up?” She mumbled sleepily, squinting at the clock. “ Can’t fall asleep...” Nick answered, not moving his gaze from the window. He could feel her eyes on him and when he looked at her, they( her eyes) were filled with unease and slight self-conciousness. He gave her a not so convincing reassuring smile. She looked away and pulled the blanket up to her chin. “ What’s the matter, Mor?” He asked, not sure what to expect with her. “ Nothing,” She murmered, closing her eyes. “ You expect me to buy that?” “...You’re already regretting it,” She whispered, still turned away from him. He stayed quiet, watching her as a tear made it’s way down her cheek. “ Nick, get out,” She said, her voice wavery but determined. “ Morgan-” “ Nick, I can’t keep playing these games with you. My heart’s on the line,” “ Morgan, I don’t know if I regret it or not. Tonight made everything seem so right for that while but...” “ But not right enough for you to stay, right?” She asked, rolling over so her back was towards him. “ Morgan, I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore, I just know that if I leave, I’m gonna be hurting and if I stay, I’m going to be guilty for screwing up a relationship.” He scooted closer to her, resting his hand on her side. “ Mor?” “ What relationship?” She asked softly, turning over to face him. “ You and Jake,” “ That one’s not gona last even if you do leave. He’s not the one for me, Nick, you are,” Her voice broke and Nick looked down at her, so many things going through his mind at once and just wishing it could them two in a quiet moment. “ Nick, we’re binded by what happened a year ago. You can’t leave now. I can’t do this alone,” Her voice dropped when the creaking of floorboards startled them both. The bathroom door opened and shut again and they could hear water running. Nick pulled away from Morgan. “ The car, your brother and his wife are going to see the car,” He sat up but Morgan clutched his hand. “ Don’t leave yet,” She whispered, needing him to stay with her, needing to feel reassurance that things were going to be alright. “ What about the car? How are you going to explain that?” “ Go park it in the back garage, they’re not going to look in there,” He nodded and sat up before pulling on his clothes and walking quietly out of the bedroom. Morgan watched as he left and shivered, the draft in the room noticibly cold. Closing her eyes, she leaned back on the pillows, more mentally tired as opposed to physically tired. She was drifting off when her bedroom door opened. “ Did you do it?” She murmered. “ Do what?” Her eyes opened when Todd’s voice rang through the silence. “ Huh?” She asked, trying to make it sound like she was talking in her sleep. “ Nevermind...Who were you speaking too a little while ago?” “ Oh, Amelia had woken up,” She lied quickly, praying Nick wouldn’t come back inside when Todd was still in the doorway. “ Oh, ok...Well, goodnight...Get some sleep, you’ve been looking pale lately,” She gave him a smile and waited until he left before she exhaled. What if Nick hadn’t gotten up to move the car? She slipped on her robe and stood up. She walked over to Amelia’s crib and looked down at her daughter. She stroked her face and listened to her breathe, needing to relax. The door opened a few minutes later and Nick walked into the room quietly shutting the door behind him. “ Could you lock that please?” She asked and heard the catch click. He wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder. “ That’s your daughter,” She whispered, remembering to keep her voice down. “ When does she wake up? I wanna hold her,” “ Around eight,” He nodded slightly and kissed her neck before pulling out of the embrace. “ Let’s get some sleep,” They both climbed back into the bed and snuggled under the covers, trying to get warm again. Nick fell asleep within minutes and Morgan lay awake until daybreak, wanting the night to last forever and become their future. Her weariness finally got to her as the sun’s first rays peeked out and she closed her eyes...
