1997-98 Readers Poll

Thank you for voting in the 1997-98 EMMS Reader's Poll. During the three weeks between Feb. 22 and March 15, 1998, we received 900 votes from people in at least 35 countries, continuing to expand participation on both counts. Your top ten choices in each of the four categories are listed here. The list of voters is posted here.

1997-98 Readers Poll winners list

  • Messaging Product of the Year: Lotus Domino

  • Messaging Service of the Year: Hotmail

  • Messaging Company of the Year: Lotus Development Corp.

  • Messaging Event of the Year: U.S. v. Microsoft trial
  • As can best be determined from a glance at the affiliations and email addresses of the voters, the Readers Poll included 900 people voting in these 35 countries: Austria, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Like any email administrator, we always sent the ballot broadcast on a Sunday night to minimize the disruption caused by this traffic spike. In past years, the entire 8K ballot went out to all the addresses listed on the voter rolls, and within minutes responses would arrive from some corner of the world where the sun was shining. No matter what time it is in New York, it's always morning somewhere.

It's not that the medium is the message. Rather, the message is the medium. Email is both the subject and verb in this annual poll. Some voters were doing this for the ninth time, ever since ballotting went worldwide in 1989. Back then, it was amazing that anyone was interconnected at all. Now, people take it for granted that all email addresses are part of one big worldwide Internet, and they communicate freely across oceans and time zones as if it always were done this way.

Thanks to all our new participants, and thanks to our many returning voters. As you know, this year we used email to distribute just an HTML pointer so that everyone could go see the ballot on the Web rather than having to return a rather lengthy text-only email. We also used email to distibute the pointer to this page, so everyone could find out the results as quickly as possible. Several voters also forwarded copies of the pointer to their friends, family, and coworkers, further enlarging the voter rolls. Everyone who voted will automatically receive a ballot next year.

EMMS 1997-98 Readers Poll list of voters.

Our sincerest thanks go out to the people who participated in this year's reader's poll. Once again you have proven why email is the killer application for data networks. Voters were given the choice of having their names included on the following list. Some 597 voters asked not to be listed, and we are honoring that request. Here's a list of the other 303.
