PRESS RELEASE - SEPTEMBER 29, 1998

Electric Mail Company Develops "Spamouflage" Service To Arm ISPs Against Unsolicited Bulk Email

SAN JOSE, CA (ISPCON), September 29, 1998 - The Electric Mail Company Inc. (VSE:ELE), a leading Email Service Provider (ESP) specializing in the delivery of Internet messaging technologies for business, announced the development of the industry's first web-based blocking service for unsolicited bulk email ('spam'). ISPs will now be able to service the unique 'spam' filtering preferences of their business clientele with a variety of proven tools. The service, code-named "Spamouflage" is now available to qualified ISPs and businesses on a beta-trial basis for the next two months.

"In the past year and a half, spam volumes have tripled from around three unwanted messages per mailbox each day to nine, and it only seems to be getting worse. Any tools in the hands of users that can help fight this problem will help to ensure that email remains a viable business tool," stated Eric Arnum, Editor of industry newsletter Electronic Mail & Messaging Systems (EMMS).

The service will be an Internet first permitting easy web-client control of server-side blocking using a combination of tools. These proven tools include; legitimate domain name checking, blocking open relays and excluding known spammers. Any or all of the service's spam blocking tools can be activated to create customized levels of filtering depending on the user's preference. "One of the greatest frustrations is when somebody inadvertently filters out a desired message. A customer-controlled, multi-level blocking service will help prevent that," commented Arnum.

"Christmas has come early for ISPs this year with the development of our new spam blocking service. The service will be the first to allow varying degrees of control depending on businesses' philosophy about the unsolicited bulk email they receive to their desktops. This easy web-based service will now permit ISPs to enhance their service offering to equip business customers with their own level of filtering. At the same time, ISPs will enjoy a "holiday" from the expense of junk email broadcasters that are consuming bandwidth without paying for it," said Cathy Munn, President and CEO of the Electric Mail Co.
