Billed as "an 11-hour
technicolor dream house of revolutionary thought,
visionary art and lysergic lectures," Disinfo.Con
2000 -- staged in New York City's Hammerstein
Ballroom on February 19 -- came across as equal
parts political rally, business conference and
circus sideshow. It was a gathering of the odd, a
mixing of maniacal minds and the perfect place for
fans of conspiracy theories, Satanism, UFO
sightings and anything else vaguely
countercultural to wave a little propaganda, sell
a few books and bond with other outcasts.
The Man with the plan: Richard Metzger,
creative director of the Disinformation
website and producer of a recently
aired Disinfo TV series in the UK.
Metzger handpicked his favorite cult heroes to
discuss whatever was currently intriguing them,
including filmmaker Kenneth Anger, videogame
designer Michael Backes, virtual reality pioneer
Mark Pesce, comics legend Grant Morrison, rock
star Marilyn Manson (via satellite) and plenty of
writers (Douglas Rushkoff, R.U. Sirius, Robert
Anton Wilson). |
