No Fairy Tale - Chapter 1
It was late October of 2005. The young man sitting at the desk in front of him was looking at pictures of his wasted youth, his childhood slipped away before he even knew what was going on.
‘’Chris?’’ the girl knocked on the door lightly, standing in the doorway. She was two years younger, but the way she presented herself, you’d think she was his age.
‘’Hey Allison.’’ He smiled gently, not ready to fully smile.
‘’I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You locked yourself in here all day again. What’s wrong, Chris?’’ she came in and sat on the desk, looking down at him. Her khaki skirt was pressed against her legs, her green shirt tightly hanging onto every curve of her chest.
‘’I don’t know. It’s just surprising that it’s over.’’
‘’I understand, but if you ever want to talk, I’m here, Chris. Don’t forget that I live here too.’’ She laughed and ran her fingers through his spiked hair, the only person who could get away with touching his precious hair.
‘’I know. So when’s dinner going to be ready?’’
‘’Pssh, boy, you think I’m cooking for you, you’ve got another thing coming.’’ She laughed, causing a slight one to escape his lips. ‘’How about we eat out tonight? It’ll do you good to get outside. Greet your public. Have fun. Be 20 Chris. You’re still young.’’
‘’Why can’t you be 18 yet?’’ he laughed slightly, returning the fingers through her hair.
‘’Because my birthday is in December. Deal with it.’’
‘’But now I can’t go to a club, because I have to baby sit you.’’
‘’Chris!’’ she giggled and tapped him lightly, running her other hand through her dark brown hair.
‘’How do you deal with this so well? You act as if nothing’s happened.’’ He pointed out changing the lighthearted conversation back to the deep and dreary one from before.
‘’Because if I sulked like you all the time, then I wouldn’t survive, Chris.’’ She stood up. ‘’I loved him more than anything, Chris. Now he’s gone. Frankie’s gone and I don’t think any of us will ever be the same.’’
‘’I know, but, Allison, you seemed like you didn’t care.’’
‘’Chris, I can’t cry anymore. I can’t let myself drown in tears because I lost the person I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with. I’ve accepted the fact that life goes on, and you should too. So the band decided to split without Frankie. There will always be other opportunities. You’re young and talented, Chris. You should have no trouble moving on.’’
‘’I’m beginning to see why Frankie was so crazy about you in the first place.’’ Chris smiled and pulled her down to his level and cupped her chin in his hands. ‘’Hey if you ever need somebody to talk to, little one, don’t hesitate to come to me. I promise I’ll take care of you.’’ He kissed her cheek and let her go. She smiled and walked to the door.
‘’Chris, get ready, we are going out to eat after all. ‘’
‘’Why didn’t I doubt that?’’
‘’I think you just used double negatives, causing that sentence to be null and void.’’
‘’Whatever.’’
‘’Hey I wasn’t valedictorian in June for nothing.’’ She laughed and walked out of the room as Chris stood up. She was really amazing.
