Larocque/Laroche/Rocque/Rock/Stone/etc. Introduction

The name has so many variants and dit noms - some include Couillard, Celeriere, Brien, and so forth.

The various names associated with Larocque/Laroche etc., continually get confused. I should have put a further explanation in my initial message.

Larocque/Laroque/Larock/Rocque/Roque/Rock/Couillaud/Rocquebrune and so forth were a distinct family with variations on the original name. The majority retained the Anglican name of ROCK.

LAROCHE is a separate family group, but far too often were confused with Larocque, and it makes it a real challenge to sort which belong to which group.

The key is that is that Larocque/etc. will always have the hard "k" sound at the end. Whereas the Laroche sounds like "sh" - as we saw in some of the census enumerations, the families were shown as Larush.

For anyone wanting to go further back, I highly recommend visiting Louis Larocque's website. It has outstanding information and will take one back to the original emigrants, along with interesting stories and old documents.

Some information has come from postings around the web, but the bulk of it comes directly from the references available to me.

By no means are any of the lines complete and I'm sure that some link up to one another more closely than I have been able to determine. If anyone has further info, please feel free to add it.

I'll do separate postings of those that have been identified as family groups and then there will be some miscellaneous odds and ends that I've not been able to place in family groups.
