We were running a little late and were happy to see they hadn't started out without us. They were waiting for a few other players to show up so me and Tony pulled out some Jawa decks and almost got in a game before the tourney started. I was DS and my first opponent Vincent Gu was LS, obviously. We swapped cards and as I was looking through I realized I had a very good deck. I didn't have any big guys, my biggest were probably Dr.E and Ponda Boba, but I had a good amount of guys and ships. What I knew would determine the games was my interrupts. I got 2 Imp. Barriers, a Lone Warrior, Limited Resources, Oota Goota Solo, Stunning Leader, Talon Roll, Dark Manuevers, It's Worse and other such useful cards, like my favorite card...Omni Box! I basically just tossed in all the useful cards and had my 50 card deck.
Game 1: Vs. Vincent Gu
I started Corulag and he started Yavin War Room. In my opening hand I got Y4 Jungle and Tatooine. I deployed both of them and a Tie Advanced to Corulag, I saved my last force for Imp Barrier. He drew up for a few turns while I invaded his War Room with a stormtrooper and drew more cards. He put down 2 Tat sites and was activating a good amount so he went for his attack. He deployed Rebel Squad Leader and 2 other leaders in the War Room to kill the trooper, I played Stunning Leader to cancel the battle. Next turn I dropped down a Trooper Recruit, Advosze and Evazan and wiped out all his characters with attrition. Then I move a trooper to the Jungle. He took over Tatooine with some ships and the sites with some guys. We just sat back and drained, I put down a guy to his D*DB to do some more draining and won the drain race. Full Win by 11.
Highlights: Quick imperial occupation and control of Y4 :o)
Lowlights: No battles near the end.
Game 2: Vs. Ben Rich
I started Corulag and he started Tatooine Cantina. We kept putting guys down in the Cantina, I put down Trevagg and a Trooper Guard to slow him down, while my Tie drained in space. The first big battle ocurred when he put down a Z-95 and Red Squad X-wing against my Tie, I barriered the X-wing. On my turn I deployed a Dreadnaught, Tie, and Tie Advanced and crushed him. Next after we built up at the Cantina for a while, he had Leia, Areil Schous, Rebel Squad Leader, a 2/2 Leader and Rebel Recruit. I had a bunch of various little guys, so I battled and played Stunning Leader to make it my 5 guys vs. his recruit. That was pretty much game, he drew up next turn. Full win by 20.
Highlights: Beatdown in Sealed Deck!
Lowlights: None.
Game 3: Vs. Bob Schultz (my dad)
Well, this wasn't a game I wanted to play but was fairly confident, which cost me big time. I drew for a few turns, and he played Griimtaash Lost on me, in SD!, he got 2 Advosze's and 2 Imperial Trooper Guards, dang. My ground force was seriously compromised now. I kept a lone Tie in space and drew trying to find some guys. On his turn he put down a Red Squad and Gold Squad with a pilot, but didn't have 1 left to battle (phew). My turn I got down a Dreadnaught and a Tie and battled, I had a Talon Roll but didn't want to chance it as he used Electrobinoculars to pick his destiny. I killed off the pilot, he killed off the Tie Advanced, then I went ahead and Talon Rolled the Y-wing, I drew a 5, he drew a 3, bye-bye Y-wing. I managed to work out a good combo on Tatooine, Evazan with a Blaster. I got some fodder for him and managed to kill off his guys while I drained in space. Full Win by 12.
Highlights: Lots of battles
Lowlights: Knowing if he had 1 more force to battle I would've lost the game.
Game 4: Vs. Jake Rich.
I started Corulag, he started with Y4 War Room. Again I got down Y4 Jungle quickly and invaded his War Room. He got down a Tat site and drew like mad for a long time. I put down 2 ties in space, a Trooper Guard at the Y4 Jungle, and a couple little guys as back-up in the War Room, and drew a little while saving 1 for my Stunning Leader. He finally made his move, he deployed Obi Wan, Jedi Lightsaber, and Sal something on him at the War Room. He battled, and forced away a Stormtrooper. I played Stunning Leader, saved me again. On my turn I put down Evazan and battled. I drew 2 3's, bye-bye Obi. He took down my 3 guys though. From there it was rather quick, I drained him for 4 a turn and it ended pretty quick, he got in a few minor drains on Tatooine. Full win by 21.
Highlights: Scrubs gave Obi a beatdown.
Lowlights: None.
At this point I was the only undefeated DS player so I was in the final, Vincent Gu, who was the first person I played was also in the final. So here we go...
Final: Vs. Vincent Gu.
Well, it took a while to start as we both chose Corulag, then Tatooine, then Mos Eisley! I finall settled on Y4 Jungle, and he settled on Tatooine Jundland Wastes. We got down some locations, he got down Kessel, Tatooine and Corulag, as well as some sites. I took over space early and chased around his Corellian Corvette. He took over ground early. My guys only managed to keep him from spreading out. He got down Mantellian Savrip and Faithful Service. Which meant I was having a hard time draining him. We had a few skirmishes in space but I retained control. I used my Tatooine text to give me a power boost when I shuttled down a bunch of pilots. I managed to play Limited Resources though which seriously hurt him and let me drain him out next turn. Full win by 3!
Highlights: Very tense, very close.
Lowlights: Why are all of DS's guys forfeit so low!?
So I took first, and got a Captain Han Solo for my prize, sweeeet! Incidentally this was the first SD I've ever won, while I've come in 2nd or 3rd countless times. So it was good to finally pull one out. Well, that's all for now.
Cheers,
Jon "Go Cap'n" Schultz
