"THE ODYSSEY"

This is the ultimate quest movie. (The word "odyssey" comes from Odysseus.) Odysseus is tricked into a venture which will keep him away from home for ten long years. While he is gone, his ever-faithful wife must fend off a multitude of suitors, who are trying to garner all of Odysseus's belongings. His wife is very clever; but the suitors are relentless.

Unaware of his wife's plight; Odysseus becomes involved in ordeal after ordeal. He encounters a "CYCLOPS", "CIRCE", and other incredible creatures. He is briefly aided by "HERMES", acting on behalf of the goddess, "ATHENA". For the most part, though, he is essentially alone. He longs to return home, but is delayed still longer and longer.

Upon Odysseus's return, he executes the greedy, relentless suitors, with his consumate archery skills. He has learned much during his quest, and his incredible patience is finally at its end.

The action is intense, the effects dazzling, and the script-writers have captured the impact of Homer's classic deftly.

Odysseus, like Jason & Perseus, is manipulated by the Greek Gods. Apparently, in their omnipotence, they need to "test" their followers, from time to time, in order to determine their loyalty & courage. This is a favorite theme of religious teachings. Even in Christianity, the same trials abound. Odysseus's plight is much like the story of JOB, with less violence. ABRAHAM also must prove his faith, by sacrificing his son to a sadistic, unloving God. Fortunately for him, the deity relents, and gives him a ram instead!

It has always puzzled me, that millions of peoples place so much faith in sadistic Deities. It would seem to me, that a religion based on fear, would be anethema to Man's pride and intellect.
