History of the BMW M3

BMW M3

The M3 was born in 1986, based on the second generation 3-series (E-30). Built by the Motorsport team at BMW AG, it was ment to be versatile, and it was. The M3 became the first production BMW that was ment for racing, rallying, and everyday driving. The E-30 M3, which lasted until 1990, had a 2.3 liter 4-cylinder engine (S14), producing 200 horsepower. This brought the M3 to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, with a top speed of 146 mph. 1990 brought the edition of 600 M3 Sport Evolutions, which while being more expensive, added adjustable front and rear spoilers. It also provided an extra 20 hp from a new 2.5 liter (S14B25) . These modifications brought the 0-60 time down to 6.9 seconds, and top speed was up to 152 mph. The Sport Evos were available in only red or black, and can be sighted by its black rims, suede steering wheel and shift knob, and red spark plug covers in the engine. There was also an M3 Convertible, but they are as rare in America as the Sport Evos. 1991 brought the end to the E-30 M3. In 1992, BMW began producing the E-36 3-series, with an M3 along side. America wasn't offered an M3, until 1995. After 2 years of letter after letter written to BMW AG, mainly by BMW CCA members, BMW produced an American version M3. That basically ment less power. Americans got a 240hp version of the straight six, while the Euro spec was 321 horse. All were 6 cylinders and 24 valves. 1995 output of American M3s was 3.0 liters (S50US engine). This was upped to 3.2 in 1996 (S52), which for Europeans was the 'Evolution' year for the E-36. All have limited slip differentials, which makes it difficult to peel out to say the least. Different packages included a lightweight version for 1995. The Lightweight was ment for racing, and came with aluminum doors, no radio, no center console, and no option for sunroof or air conditioning. It also had lighter wheels, reduced soundproofing, and cloth only seats. The only color available was Alpine white with the Motorsport flag painted on both ends. 1997 saw the addition of the 4-door M3, as well as a luxury package. The sedan died in 1999, and may not come back as an E-46 in 2003. A convertible was offered throughout. The 2003 E-46 M3 will be better for Americans, as full European power will be brought over. Hopefully even the Euro six speed transmission! I can't wait.NEW RUMORS JUST DISCOVERED!! The E46 M3 will have a standard 340hp 3.4 liter, alloy in-line 6 (EURO AND US!).
