THE STANDARD

In the not too distant future, a coalition of international groups is planning a return to the gold standard in resolving a global recession. A criminal network of drug cartels and financial speculators are plotting to convert their holdings into bullion before launching attacks against major gold depositories in three countries to give them a monopoly in the new market.

MI6 agent William Shanahan sees the mission to thwart the criminals as a chance to land an executive desk job in London. His job is to infiltrate the network with the aid of UDA gunman Jack Gawain, whose assignment is to distract and overcome the cartel’s top assassin, Enrique Chupacabra. Though challenged in overcoming a personal dislike for Gawain, Shanahan finds himself backing Gawain’s bold initiatives in creating chaos in Chupacabra’s inner circle.

Shanahan is conflicted by his inner need to maintain a higher moral standard than Gawain. Yet after a car bombing, an armed robbery and a strangulation, Shanahan realizes that his superiors’ tacit approval shows they will stop at nothing to derail the criminal enterprise. Shanahan follows Gawain’s lead and finds himself in direct contact with a representative of the Sardinian Mob as well as Chupacabra himself.

Shanahan and Gawain follow Chupacabra to Miami where Gawain enters a million-dollar domino game against Chupacabra. When another female member of Chupacabra’s entourage is murdered, he suspects that Gawain’s presence is more than a coincidence. He decides to play mind games with Gawain by recruiting Fianna Hesher, his gal pal, as the newest addition to his clique. Keeping her away from Gawain makes him realize that not only Chupacabra is onto him, but is using Fianna as a hostage.

MI6 learns that the cartel plans to detonate a ‘dirty bomb’ near Fort Knox to sabotage the US gold surplus, and sends the team in to abort the mission. Gawain escapes a double-cross after the bombers are foiled, though Shanahan is nearly killed by a Chupacabra hit squad. Shanahan manages to convince Gawain to take his place on a team destined for Iran to foil yet another attack: a missile strike on the gold bank in Zurich. The MI6 team is successful, and Shanahan and Gawain are both decorated for their service to Queen and Country.

The morality theme resonates throughout the novel as Shanahan struggles with the complexity of legal and moral issues presented throughout the mission. There is also the psychological conflict of Shanahan’s need to prove himself worthy of a higher station, trying to overcome his working-class background through superior mental, physical and moral prowess. It gives place to the action/adventure main event pitting the UK and the USA against the criminal enterprise, trying to foil Operation Blackout lest it gains control over the global economy by destroying the Anglo-Americans’ financial infrastructure.

CYCLOPS

This is a story about a 21st century Ku Klux Klan establishing itself in Kansas City, Missouri. Its leader, Jim Ralston, is a blue-collar worker who is approached by disenfranchised skinheads donating their take from a drug robbery to finance the project. He opens a social club in Independence and enlists two of his closest friends, fellow carpenter Billy Maxwell and ex-SEAL Debbie Skelley, to help launch the operation. Billy and Debbie open up social clubs in Westport and Lee’s Summit and begin recruiting new members to establish their presence in the Tri-City area. Their objective is to provide support to working class Christian families in the area, but their money-making schemes cause their plans to go awry.

Conflicts within the story evolve as Debbie’s Klavern opens a home improvement company and becomes increasingly involved in illegal scams as their fortunes increase. Billy’s Klavern begins shaking down local drug dealers and becomes a target of drug gangs in the vicinity. Their worst fears are realized when a serial killer makes his presence known in the Tri-City area, the crime scenes indicating a racial motivation. Detective Darrell Mathis, an African-American, initiates a campaign against the killer, known as Orion, and focuses his investigation on the Klansmen. He, in turn, develops empathy for Jim and his girlfriend Lilya, whose humanitarian efforts have revived the spirits of the residents of Sugar Creek. Darrell also discovers that Debbie’s Klavern has developed a Robin Hood reputation among black residents in Lee’s Summit for providing care packages for the needy.

The novel explores the intricate relations between activist groups and their surrounding communities, and how they are forced to make decisions that change their own world views and social philosophies in resolving complex issues. The Klan finds itself increasingly empowered in changing the neighborhoods in which they live, and racial barriers begin to collapse as they recognize their responsibility towards their fellow man regardless of race or creed. Alternately, minority groups are able to see the evolution of the Klan and develop a new respect for its members, seeing past the robes and historical stigma just as the Klan begins to see past skin color. The theme of reconciliation is resonant throughout the novel as racial, political, economic and religious differences continue to be resolved, the protagonists brought to a new understanding of one another and their ability to change their environment through faith, hope and charity. The Orion Killer helps refocus the community as ‘us and them’ becomes ‘him and us’, everyone joining together against a common threat to their newfound solidarity.

A colorful cast of characters, witty and engaging dialogue, authentic depictions of 21st century metropolitan Kansas City, a fast-paced narrative and an intriguing, powerful storyline make Cyclops one of the most unique perspectives on social and cultural urban issues of the decade. For suspense fans, current events buffs and readers looking for something completely different, this is a story they won’t forget.
