The Past Comes Back

Jen had stayed at Pacey's, and she slept on the floor in his room by his closet. That way if his brother, or parents walked in she would be hidden to them-- unless they came all the way in of course...Pacey woke up when he heard the front door shut as his parents left for the day. He had forgotten about Jen sleeping in his room, and startled himself when he saw her sleeping. He smiled, and walked over to her to wake her up.

"Wake up, Jen." he said. "We have a lot to do today."

"What?" she mumbled.

"Come on...you know? Research the son of the devil...Eric's past..." he said climbing over her to get to his closet.

"That's right." she said, slightly smiling. "I forgot sleeping here helped a lot. Thanks, Pacey." she said sitting up on the floor.

"No problem. The sooner we take care of this the sooner you can go home and have a restful sleep in your own room." he said as he slipped on his white t-shirt.

"Yeah." she stood up, and walked to the bedroom door. "Is it safe to go out there?" she asked.

"Yeah, they left for the day. Like they always do on Sundays."

"Okay." she said leaving toward the bathroom.

"This is not what I need..." he said out loud. "I can't like two girls at the same time...it's not right!" He said falling back on his bed. "What am I gonna do now?"

*****

Dawson woke up and found Joey getting her shoes on by the window. Her hair was pulled up in a ponytail, and he sat up slightly, holding himself up with his right hand. She was wearing a purple top that was cut short right above her belly button. She was wearing jeans like always though.

"Morning." he said smiling.

"Hey, sleepy head." she said, looking up at him with a big smile. "Get out of bed, we got a lot of stuff to see here today." she said getting up, and throwing at him a shirt.

"What time is it Jo?" he asked removing the shirt from his face.

"It's almost nine in the morning. Everything will be open soon. C'mon!" she said, pushing him to get off the bed.

"Alright." he said laughing.

Joey sat at the edge of the bed, watching Dawson take his clothes with him into the bathroom. She knew he had things planned for them already. So, she was gonna change them. She walked to his suitcase, and took out his planner. She flipped it open, and saw that she was right. Everything was already planned.

"Hey, what are you doing?" he asked coming from behind her.

"Nothing." she said placing the planner behind her.

"Oh, yeah, then why are you hiding my planner behind your back, Jo?" he asked, with a grin. "Come on give it back to me."

"No." she said, smiling.

"Come on, give it back." he said, starting to laugh.

"No way." she said turning around slightly, her back to the bed.

"I know how to get it from you." he said walking toward her. She fell on the bed laughing.

"Oh really?" she said sarcastically. "How's that sherlock?"

"By doing this.." he said as he started to tickle her.

"Okay, ok!!" she yelled through laughter. "Here."

"Thank you." he said smiling, taking it from her.

They both got up. Dawson grabbed his and her jacket, and walked to the door.

"So, how much did you see?" he asked.

"Not much." she said, jokingly.

"Well, lets get breakfast first...then we'll go look around Boston." Dawson said taking Joey's hand.

"Sounds good to me." she said smiling as they walked to the elevator.

*****

Eric had to walk around Capeside today to try and find the perfect spot for his plan to work. He would have to ask around, and try not to get anyone suspicious of his actions or motives. He was dress in a black t-shirt that was tight, his black jeans that were also tight, his black boots, and his black leather jacket. He was the perfect man in black, and he found the way he dressed scared some people. Yet it didn't scare Joey, and that is why he first liked her.

Eric locked the house behind him, and started off toward town. He would walk around stop off at the hot spots of Capeside, and ask all the local teens around where the coolest places are. He would have to find someplace very secluded, and off the beaten path.

*****

Pacey and Jen arrived at Eric's home as he was leaving. They hid behind the bushes until he was out of sight. Then Jen went ahead of Pacey, and went up to the front door.

"Damn it, Jen!" Pacey said. "Don't do that!"

"The door is locked!" she said after trying the door knob. She turned around and looked at Pacey. He was looking around the porch.

"I have no idea, I never tried to break into someone's house before.

"Well, neither have I." she said. "Come on, lets try the back way..." she said starting down the steps, and going around the house.

"Wait up, Jen!" Pacey called after her.

Jen reached the patio door, and tried the door. To her relief it slid open, and she quickly went inside. Pacey followed her, shutting the door behind him. Jen walked over to the fireplace, and stood in front of it, looking around.

The room was practically empty except for the small couch, a coffee table, and a trunk in the corner.

"This might not be such a good idea after all..." Jen said, running her hands through her hair. "He doesn't have much of anything here."

"You forget there is an upstairs." Pacey said, pointing up.

"That's true." she said with a smile.

"Let's look up there first...come on." Pacey said starting for the stairs. This time Jen followed him.

Pacey walked to the room at the very end of the hallway. There wasn't anything there. He shook his head. "This is not gonna be as easy as they appear to be in the movies." he said out loud to himself.

"Pacey, come here!" he heard Jen yell from one of the other rooms. He turned around and looked in each room till he found her in the room right ahead of the stairs.

"Look." she said holding up a picture of a young girl.

"Who is that?" he asked, taking the picture out of her hand.

"I don't know...maybe his sister, or an ex-girlfriend." she said turning back to the drawer she had opened. "Look another picture. But this one seems to be of his family. The girl has to be his sister, cause she is in this picture too."

"Okay, so we know he has a sister." Pacey said handing the picture back to Jen.

"Yeah, but it doesn't help us." she said still rummaging through the drawer.

Pacey walked around the room, trying to find something else. But Jen stayed at the drawer. She came across a newspaper article. It was an article on a murder in New York, and the article seemed familiar to her. There was a picture of the murder victim and it was the same picture she found in the drawer. It was the same girl.

"Pacey look at this." she said turning to face him.

"What did you find?" he asked walking over to her.

"Look at this." she said handing him the article. "The girl that was murdered is the same girl that was in the picture I found."

"But it says in this article that her father lost control, and killed her. Listen:

'The murder that happened the other night shocked the whole state of New York. Victoria Randall, age fifteen, was shot and killed by her own father. He had come home in a rage after drinking with a few friends from his work. When he came home he apparently got into a heated argument with his daughter, and what followed his described by the one witness, her brother Eric Randall, age fourteen.

"He was yelling at her for nothing really, and he walked to his gun closet and pulled out his '44 Magnum. I ran upstairs after that and called 9-1-1. When I hung up the phone, I heard the gunshots. He shot her three times." he said, trying to hold back tears. "When I went downstairs I saw her lying on the floor surrounded by blood. I ran over to him, and starting hitting him over and over again. I will hate him the rest of my life for taking my sister, my best friend away from me." he finally starts to cry, and leaves to be alone.

We all sympathize with Mrs. Randall and her son. The trial for Mr. Randall is set to be this Thursday.'"

"That poor girl." Jen said.

"So, we know from this is his father was a drunk, psycho, and Eric hated him for killing his sister." Pacey said sitting down next to Jen.

"Keep looking." Jen said. "There has to be something else here!!"

(in this scene it will go through Dawson and Joey's touring Boston with this song playing in the background. Think of an episode of your favorite couple on any soap when they are going around having fun, and a song is playing throughout their time there...kay? The song is: 'I'm Loving Every Moment With You' by Celine Dion. The lyrics will be at the end of this scene...for those who don't know it.)

Dawson and Joey are touring Boston. Their first stop is to the Boston Freedom Trail. They go up and down every street, they go in every souvenir shops, and they even visit Paul Revere's house. They get tips from people that work there where else to visit. Laughing and having a blast. They bought cinnamon sticks, and cokes. They ate corn dogs for lunch, and chips. When they were done with that, they caught the next bus to continue their adventure...

Dawson and Joey get to the New England Aquarium Central. They take a tour group at first but wonder off on their own after they lose the group. They look at the different exotic fish, the sharks, the sea turtles that were in giant ocean tanks, a penguin colony, a sea lion show, and the hands on tide pool exhibit. Where they splashed each other a couple times with the water, before getting chased out by security guards. They laughed all the way out of the place.

Dawson and Joey then go all the way to Salem to see the New England Pirate Museum. They went into a pirate cave that had 60 life size pirates that included Captain Kidd, and Blackbeard. They did look life like, which got Dawson thinking about how he could improve on his techniques.

After that last trip they decided to call it a day, and headed back to the hotel. But instead they stopped off at a restaurant that only served Itallian dishes. So they had dinner, talking and laughing over plates of spaghetti, bread sticks, and cokes.

When they got back to the hotel they were both tired. But they couldn't stop talking about what they were gonna do tomorrow. They got changed, and got into bed. Saying goodnight with a good night kiss.

(The lyrics to the song: Do you realize how long it's been
Where does all my time with you go?
And all the memories
We shared as friends
Reflected-in my heart
Is where they show
I'm loving every moment with you
I'm living in a dream that's comin' true
I'm lost in everything you do
I love you
I'm saving every moment for you
You're hidden in a place that's safe & true
Lovin' everything we do
With every second
You hold me near
I'm closer to a place I want to be
To hear you whisper
But no one else can hear
I want your love
To stay forever-inside of me
In our silence
Looking in your eyes
I hear words you don't need to say
Just hold on Baby
'Cause it's reason-I'm prayin'
You feel what I feel
In every way
Now on with the story....)

*****

Jen and Pacey were still rummaging through the drawer that they found the article in. There wasn't anything there. They had found the article on Eric's sister's death, but nothing else. That was only one lie put straight. He was actually living in this house alone. Or at least from what they knew of.

"You know, I bet we could find something out from that trunk downstairs." Pacey said starting to leave the room.

"Yeah, I agree. But most likely its locked." she said standing up.

"Why do you say that?" he said turning to face her. She was right behind him when he turned.

"Because he was from New York, most kids lock those things up so no one can see what they have in it." she said, walking past him. "Besides, name one trunk you have come across that didn't lock?"

"Okay, but how will we know what's in it if we can't see what's in it?" Pacey asked as they went downstairs.

"I don't know, Pacey." she said going to the patio door. "But we have to leave. He could be back any minute." she said opening the door, and leaving.

"You gotta a point." he said following her out. "But now what do we do?" he said shutting the door behind him, and following Jen.

"Your family is in the police right?" she asked him, turning to face him when she reached the trees.

"Yeah, sort of. Why?" he asked, not sure he liked this.

"Well, do you know how to get into the police computer files from your house, or any computer?"she asked, smiling.

"I could..."he said, "but the only computer I could use is Dawson's. Cause my family won't let me near ours." he saw he smile widen as she turned around. "No, I can't do that Jen." he said turning her back around.

"We have to find out if he has a record or anything right? That's the only way Pacey." she said, serious, and determined.

"But..."

"Look, with or without your help I am gonna get the answers." she said.

"Alright. Let's go to Dawson's. I'll tell his mom or dad he gave me permission to use it while he was away for school." he said taking her hand and started walking to the lake to find the boat to row to Dawson's.

"Thank you Pacey." she said.

"I better not regret this," he whispered to himself.

*****

Eric got home just as the full moon started to come out of the clouds. He unlocked the front door, and walked in. He walked to the fireplace and started a nice hot fire. He stood there for a minute, then walked to the kitchen and took out a bottle of red wine from the refrigerator. He placed the bottle on the counter and reached up into the cabinet for a wine glass. He poured himself some of the wine, and took both the bottle and the cup back into the living room.

He was celebrating. He had found the woods in this little city. The perfect spot was an abandoned cabin in the middle of the woods, very close to the lake. He had walked around the lake and found it came a mile from Joey's house. He knew just how he was going to make his plan work now. The cabin looked like it was suppose to be another house, but they stopped and just made it into a cabin. It was also slightly furnished. There was a bed on the second floor, and a chair in the living room.

Eric smiled, and laughed walked to the patio door. This was gonna work better than what he was gonna do for his father. He did himself in to Eric's great satisfaction. But he didn't want to lose his mother, that was not part of the plan. "Well, I hope you are burning in hell father. You took both the woman you supposedly love with you in the end, and you kill your only daughter. You never cared about me, so I guess this is for the best. I am without any family, and I am partly glad of that. No one to tell me I am messing my life up, or anything." he said taking a long drink of the wine. "And no one to tell me I can't drink this lovely wine you, dear dad, helped me purchase." he laughed again, and walked outside. He sat down on the chair outside, and looked at the water.

"Now besides my love, Joey. Thoughts of Jen haunt my mind. In a different sense yes...but still she is there." he said taking another sip from his drink. "She hates me, and I made it easy for her to the other night. She could be a threat to me, and spoil everything if she finds out anything from my past." he stood up, and walked to the edge of the water. "Well, if it comes to the point that I will have to handle her as well, I will. And I know the perfect way too..." he said smiling at the water.

*****

Jen and Pacey came through Dawson's window as quietly as they could. It was late, and his parents were asleep right now. Pacey walked to the computer, and turned it on. Jen walked to his bedroom door, and shut it as quietly as she could. Jen walked over to Pacey, and looked over his shoulder.

"So," she whispered. "Get started."

"Okay, give me a minute..."he said. He started typing on the keyboard, and soon a screen popped up that said 'Capeside Police Department'. He typed in a password of some kind, and soon the screen popped up with a choice of searching files, or other police departments. Pacey typed in the New York Police Department, and hit return.

"Are you taking precautions...that way they can't track you doing this..." she asked him still whispering.

"Don't have to." he said. "They aren't worried about that sort of thing here. They are too trusting."Before the screen popped up he typed in a few things that made no sense to Jen, and turned back to her. "But now I am protected for about an hour from the New York Police department finding us.." he said smiling. The screen popped up for the New York Police Department, and Pacey quickly typed in the files section Randall and hit enter.

The screen that popped up next was on Daniel Randall, and Eric Randall. Pacey clicked on Eric Randall's.

"I'll print this out so we can look at it later.." he said printing it out. He clicked out of that file, and clicked on Daniel Randall's and did the same with that one. After they printed out, he quickly got out of the system, and back to Dawson's computer screen. Pacey took the papers, and sat down on the bed. Jen saw his school reports folder, and clicked to open it. It came up that it needed a password, and she typed in what she thought would be the password, and it worked. The file opened and found it was a log of some kind. She began to read:

Dear Computer:

I have felt like my whole world has been turned upside down. Everything I have known, and thought to be true, has been turned into nothing more than fairy tales, and lies. The one thing to remain constant in my world is my friendship with Joey. She is my best friend, and no one will ever know me the way she does. No matter what happens in our lives, our bond just keeps getting stronger and stronger. The more I think about my feelings for her, the more I am sure I love her. I love her more than words can ever say. I never thought I would believe that a kiss like I got from Jen that fateful night could ever be beaten. It was the first kiss I ever had, and yet it was beaten. By my best friend!! I know it was just a dare, and that it might not of meant anything to Joey at the time. But I pushed it aside. I didn't think about it. I miss her. We had a fight, sort of, the other night. She said it was fine, that she understood, but I saw the hurt in her eyes. She likes to handle everything on her own. But now I wonder if I made the right move or not. By letting her go, before I had a chance to be with her. I have been with her all my life practically. And I know I will never lose her. But the feeling is still there. Have I lost her to some other guy? Have I lost my one true love to some stranger? And if I have, will I be able to get her back? Or is it too late for Joey and me?

"Jen what are you doing?" Pacey asked as he looked up and saw her reading something on the screen.

"I thought I would see what he was working on in school, and found this instead." she said, "It needed a password, and I typed in Joey's full name...you know Josephine...well, it worked, and I got in."

"Jen," he said getting up. He left the papers on the bed, and walked over to her. He clicked it off. Not reading it, and turned off the computer. "You know its over for you two...so what's wrong?"

"Its just I know its over, but I also know I let a good thing go when I shouldn't have." she said getting up. "But I know he will always love Joey. And I can move on. I mean there are plenty of fish in the sea right?" she said sitting on the bed.

"Yeah," he said sitting beside her.

"So, back to why we came her?" she said, looking at the papers. "Did you read anything interesting yet?" she asked.

"Nope, here you take Eric's and I'll look at this one." Pacey said, smiling handing her Eric's file printout.

"Okay." she said smiling back at him.

*****

Eric walked inside, and shut the door...locking it behind him. Eric prided himself on how people feared him. He almost felt like he was adopted by the family he lived with for sixteen years, because he felt like the black sheep of the family. He felt all his life that evil was growing inside him everyday of his life.

He walked to the trunk, and opened it to take out a diary. It was worn, and on the cover it read: Victoria's Diary. He always stole this from her growing up, and he remembered her entries from her crushes and her dates. He sat down with the diary in hand, and sat the wine glass down on the coffee table. He opened the diary up to the last entry that his sister would ever make.

Dear Diary,

I am afraid this might be my last entry. I haven't even told Eric my fears. I have to tell someone so I will tell you. Last couple of nights when I came home from my dates with Richie, I swear to you I am gonna marry him. He makes me so happy. But this isn't why I am writing to you tonight. My father is losing his mind!! He has been coming every night lately drunk and yelling at me for nothing really, Its just because I am the only one up that late. I know I am only fifteen, but I will be sixteen in four weeks. I will be able to drive, and I have plans on moving to Capeside soon after my birthday. My mom said the house they built for me out there is so beautiful, that it fits all my dreams. I can't wait to see it. My brother will move with me. That way I will get him away from our father before he goes psycho on us. He will love it out there, and he already is protective of me...but he doesn't tell me to do anything, he just tells me to be careful. He threatens my boyfriends, and for some reason they are always scared of him. I am laughing at the thought of them running away because of my brother. Which is what happened. Oh, God...he's home and having a fit right now! Oh god, I heard something break...he is yelling and so is my mother. I hope he doesn't hurt her. My brother doesn't need that. He has feared our father since I can remember...and I have no clue how he knew of our father's evil side I don't know. But for some reason I am the only one he doesn't seem to scare. He is a perfect angel to me, and I know he will always look after me. My father is coming up the stairs I have to go. Write later tomorrow night. Bye.

Victoria

Eric shut the book, and walked to the glass door to the patio. She was the only one in his life that treated him with respect as his own person. That was why she was the only one that saw his good side. That was why he didn't scare her. He was always protecting her, and he scared off most her boyfriends. But Richie was the only guy that just told him he wouldn't hurt her in any way, and that he would treat him like a brother for as long as he was with his sister. He liked Richie...and felt bad for his 'brother' when he saw him at Victoria's funeral. He was crying, and to see a big guy like Richie cry showed that all guys have a heart and that he really did love Victoria.

Eric put the fire in the fireplace out, and walked upstairs to go to bed.

"Goodnight Victoria...and Goodnight Joey wherever you are." he said looking at the moon from the stairs.

*****

Jen was half asleep reading the rest of the report on Eric. While Pacey seemed to have found something interesting on the guy Daniel that he was reading on. Jen sat up.

"What are you reading on the Daniel guy?" she asked. "It must be interesting, cause you haven't looked up from that report since you started reading it."

"This guy Daniel is Eric's father. The guy that killed his sister..." he said, still reading. "You know when Eric surfaced in Capeside..." he said looking up.

"Yeah, it was the day after the dance." Jen said.

"Okay, well...it says here that three nights before he showed up here..."he looked down on the paper, and quoted. " 'Daniel Randall was surrounded at his house by the cops that responded to the fire alarm set off by a unnamed source. Daniel shoved his wife into the passenger side of their family car, and drove off the grounds using the grass lawn to get around the cars. They chased him till he sped off the road over a cliff. Killing himself and his wife. When police returned to the house, they found all the money in the Randall's vault missing, credit cards missing, and all of Mrs. Randall's jewelry missing. Pictures were also found missing out of their room, and there was no trace of where their son Eric Randall disappeared to.'" Pacey looked up, and saw Jen lying down on the bed. He smiled and walked over to her. "Did you hear me?"

"Ummhmm..." she said.

"What do you think?" he said. "Wake up..." he said pushing her a little.

"Okay I am awake..." she said sitting up.

"Well, what do you think?" he asked again.

"There isn't anything there to help us." she said, standing up.

"Yes, there is." he said. "There was an unnamed source that set the fire alarm off. Right?"

"Yes, but there is no way for us to get a hold of who that might have been. And he might not of seen anything." she said walking to the window.

"What about your ex-boyfriend....Billy the Kid?" Pacey asked. "Couldn't he ask around and find out for us?"

"I guess he could..." Jen said turning to face Pacey.

"Call him..." Pacey said turning around. He walked to the phone in the room, and picked up the receiver.

"Now?" Jen said walking over to him.

"Yeah now." he said handing her the phone.

Jen sat down on the bed, and dialed the phone number to Billy's house.

"Hello," a slightly asleep voice said at the end of the phone.

"Hey, Billy." Jen said sounding excited.

"Jen?" he was shocked but he sat straight up to her voice. "What are you calling here for?"

"I need you do me a favor..." she asked. "Its life and death."

"What is it? You know I would do anything for you Jen." he said.

"Okay, here is what I need you to do..." she goes into detail telling him that she needs him to ask around to see if anyone knows anything about a Eric Randall. He said he would, and would call her tomorrow at Pacey's.

"Let's go home." Pacey said, walking to the window.

"Yeah, sounds good to me." she said following him out the window.

*****

Dawson woke up before Joey the next morning. He got out of bed, and walked to the bathroom with a towel. He closed the door, and started to undress. He took off his shirt, and then his pants. He walked over to the shower, and turned the water on. He adjusted it to the point that it was perfect, and started the shower. He took off his briefs, and stepped into the shower.

Joey woke up, and looked at the clock. It read nine in the morning. They had slept longer today than they did yesterday. Today was their last day in Boston. Joey sat up, and heard the shower going. She would have to wait to use the shower now. She got up, and walked to the phone that was on Dawson's side of the bed. She called up room service and asked for breakfast to be sent up to their room. She walked to the window, and stared at the beautiful sky. She heard the shower stop but she didn't turn around.

Dawson came out with the towel around his waist. He saw Joey standing at the window, and he walked over to her.

"Bathroom is now yours, Joey." he said smiling.

"Thanks." Joey said turning to face him. Their faces were only about three inches apart. "Excuse me, Tarzan...I need to get by." she smiled.

"The towel isn't that short." he said laughing as she walked around him.

Joey walked into the bathroom, and shut the door securely behind her. She took off her shorts, and walked over to the shower. She turned the water on, and adjusted it till it was just right for her. Then she turned on the shower. She took off her top and got into the shower.

Dawson dried himself off, threw the towel in the closet, and put on his briefs. He walked over the closet and took the white shirt he wore out that day he went with Billy and Pacey to Providence. But his time he wouldn't put a sweater over it. He laid it on the bed, and took out his blue jeans and belt from his suitcase. He put the jeans on first, and then his socks and shoes. When he was tying his right shoe, Joey stepped out of the bathroom.

Her hair was wet, and slightly curly. She was holding the towel at the top to make sure it didn't fall off. Dawson couldn't take his eyes off her. She looked beautiful even in a towel. She smiled and walked to the closet. She took out her shirt, and laid it on the bed. She then walked to her suitcase and took out her jeans, underwear, and bra. She picked up her shirt, and walked back into the bathroom. Her eyes watching Dawson as she shut the door.

Dawson sat there for a second before putting on his left shoe. Joey reemerged from the bathroom after he put his shirt on. She had changed quickly, and was out of the way so he could get in and brush his hair. She sat down on the bed, and started putting her socks and shoes on.

"So, you ready for another fun day?" Dawson said coming out of the bathroom.

"Yeah, and then its back to Capeside tomorrow morning." she said standing up.

"Yeah," Dawson said. "Well, let's get going." Dawson said grabbing the room key, his wallet, and started toward the door. Joey right behind him.
