My Best Friend's Wedding

***Dawson’s room***
“That ending sucked,” exclaimed Joey, while sitting up to put her shoes on.
“What was so bad about it?” asked Dawson.
“The whole point of movies is to perpetuate people’s fantasies, but that movie was totally lacking in the area of happy endings. Julia Roberts should have gotten the guy. She ended up getting stuck with the singing gay guy.”
“Since when are you into happy endings? And who says that wasn’t a happy ending?” inquired Dawson.
“I’m not into happy endings, and believe me I know reality will never end in one, but movies are supposed to give people hope and not remind them of their sorry, unhappy lives,” explained Joey, “Plus that ending was completely miserable. Sure the guy gets who he wants, but not without loosing a really good friend. Moreover Julia Roberts the main character, the one that’s supposed to end up happy doesn’t. And why are you suddenly into movies portraying reality?”
Dawson gets and walks over to get the video out of the VCR. “I’ve come to the cynical, but true conclusion that maybe movies should depict life accurately. Why should movies get people’s hopes up when they’ll just come crashing once they come back into the real world? In reality how many relationships work out? The most likely outcome is it ends ugly and then those two best friends in the whole world loose that totally wonderful open relationship they had, just for a fleeting fling.”
“Dawson, this sudden cynicism towards movies doesn’t have anything to do with the girl next door does it? And why isn’t it realistic for best friends to get involved and having it not end ugly? Sure there’s a moderate risk of heartbreak, but isn’t there always a risk when love is concerned?”
Dawson replies with a defensive voice, “No, it has nothing to do with Jen, that’s been over for two weeks already and I’m moving on now. I just think relationships that are built on such personal friendships don’t work out, because there’s no mystery, there’s no chemistry. If there was love at first sight then the two friends would have gotten together long before they became such good friends.”
Annoyed by Dawson’s complete oblivious view of the situation, Joey replies, “I think you’re views on the situation are completely based on fear. The only reason you don’t think two best friends should get involved is because it’s too scary for you to think about perhaps loosing the one good, solid relationship in your life?”
Dawson listens intently to Joey’s analysis of the dilemma at hand, but seems a little confused once Joey begins talking like he is the one in the situation and that it is not a hypothetical situation that they’re talking about anymore.

The bell rings signaling the start of lunch. Dawson, Pacey, Joey, and Jen all assemble in the lunch room and sit down to eat. Dawson seems a bit preoccupied, still thinking about what Joey said last night. He keeps telling himself that she didn’t mean anything when she referred to him as being scared, they were just discussing a hypothetical topic.
“So Dawson how does that sound?” asked Pacey.
Dawson quickly snaps out of his train of thought. “What? Yeah sure, Pacey.”
“Ahh, so the truth comes out, Dawson finally admits to a secret relationship with my gay brother,” says Pacey jokingly.
Dawson finally becomes coherent again and realizes what Pacey is insinuating. “Shut up, Pacey. You’re way to obsessed with your brothers sexual orientation.”
“Hey there’s nothing wrong with being gay, I just feel Deputy Doug shouldn’t deny who he really is,” says Pacey smiling.
“So Dawson, let’s get off the topic of Pacey’s pathetic obsessions,” says Joey.
Pacey interjects, “Excuse me Joey, my pathetic obsessions, what about …” Joey kicks Pacey under the table to keep him from finishing. Pacey momentarily stops and a face of pain quickly flashes across his face, and then he continues his thought, “I mean what about Dawson’s obsession with J…”
“Oh you mean my obsession with Jaws and Spielberg flicks,” says Dawson quickly, while kicking Pacey under the table.
“So what were u obsessing about just know?” Pacey winks at Dawson.
“Well it’s none of your business but I was just thinking about the movie Joey and I were analyzing last night.” Joey’s face becomes a bit flushed when remembering their conversation and how she almost told Dawson her secret.
“So what movie were you watching Dawson?” asks Jen, curious as to which movie has Dawson so intrigued.
“My Best Friend’s Wedding,” says Dawon flatly trying to avoid another debate on the movie.
“I love that movie, it’s very amusing,” says Jen missing Dawson’s apparent now non existent interest on the topic.
“Can we say life imitating art?” asks Pacey. “Ironic, My Best Friend’s Wedding, is a total parallel to us.”
“Oh I can’t wait to hear this twisted and screwed up explanation,” says Joey sarcastically.
“No really think about it, Jen as the beautiful Cameron Dias, Dawson as the best friend caught in-between, and Joey as the conniving lusting best friend.”
“Well, let’s see here Pacey, that would be true if Dawson and Jen were going out and if I wasn’t just “Friends” with Dawson,” points out Joey. “But there is one very true aspect to that explanation. That leaves u to be the gay friend, and how true it is.”
“He gets the girl in the end, I have no complaints, and I doubt you would either Jo” Pacey says smiling at Joey.
“Bite me,” Joey says as she punches Pacey.
“You wish,” says Pacey.
Pacey begins to stand up, “Well as much as I enjoy getting beat up, I think I’ll go get my lunch now.”
“I guess, since I have to eat as well, I will go up with him too,” says Joey unenthusiastically.
Pacey and Joey leave to get their lunch, leaving Jen and Dawson at the table alone.
“Well can we say awkward?” asks Jen.
“Why should this be awkward Jen, I think we’re mature enough to handle a close friendship even after the fact that we broke up,” states Dawson boldly, although he was lying through his teeth.
“If you think you can this Dawson then I think we have a chance of making this work.”
Although Dawson had his heart set on winning Jen back, and he was disappointed with Jen’s proposal of just friendship, he was content at the moment thinking of the possibility of building a romantic relationship on this “friendship.”
Joey and Pacey return to the table laughing about something.
“What’s so funny guys?”
“Oh nothing just an inside joke,” says Pacey as he looks at Joey and they both start laughing again.
Dawson feels a twinge of jealousy, seeing them having a good time without him.
Jen interrupting Joey and Pacey’s little inside joke asks, “So listen guys, I’m having this little sweet sixteen get together slash party on Sat. at the yacht club, and I wanted to know if you guys could come?”
“I’d love to Jen, what time?”
“Around 6, what about you two?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Pacey says.
“How bout you Joey?”
“Hmm… I’ll have to check my social calendar, oh what a surprise I’m free on Sat. so why not,” says Joey.
The bell rings to signal the end of lunch.
