My Best Friend's Wedding II

***Sat. night***

***Dawon’s Room***

Dawson is getting ready for Jen’s party. Joey climbs through Dawson’s window and asks, “Having a hard time picking out something to wear?” She survey’s the room to find practically every article of clothing Dawson owns thrown on his bed and his floor.

“Yeah, I don’t even have the slightest inkling of what to wear to this thing. I wish I could just be like you and just throw anything on.”

Joey a bit hurt tells Dawson, “Well you sure know how to give a damn good compliment, Jen must have been mentally screwed up when she broke up with you.”

“I’m sorry Jo, I didn’t mean it like that. I meant you aren’t trying to impress anyone, but I really want to impress Jen. If I play my cards right, I may be able to win her back.”

“I thought you said you were over her.”

“I lied.”

“Well it’s nice to know that our friendship is based on honesty.”

“It is Jo, but I was in denial. When I told you that I thought if I said it enough my feelings for her would go away.”

“Dawson, trust me feelings don’t just get willed away. I know because…” Joey said stopping herself before she said anymore.

“You know because why Jo?” Dawson with a questioning look on his face.

“Nothing, never mind,” Joey said trying to get off the dangerous topic, “So, Romeo how are you planning to win Jen back?”

“It will be perfect. We’ll start out with a dance or two, and then I’ll tell her what a good time I’m having and she’ll say what a good time she’s having. Then I’ll ask her to give me another chance, we’ll kiss and then I can die happy.”

“Dawson, no offense but what makes you think she will want you back, I mean she did dump you.”

“Jo, do you have to keep reminding me, I tried to block that out of my memory and when I ask her tonight we’re going to start over with a clean slate.”

“Well for what it’s worth, not much probably, but I think when Jen dumped you and if she turns you down tonight it’s her lose. It’s pretty pathetic, but there are only a few good ones, and you’re one of them.”

“Thanks Jo, and don’t worry I’m sure you’ll find one of the good ones,” says Dawson sincerely. Joey says under her breath, “I’ve already found one of the good ones.”

“What Jo?” Dawson asks as he glances at his watch, “Oh, it’s getting late maybe we should go, I don’t want to be late.” Dawson starts to make his way downstairs with Joey following him.

Joey says sarcastically, “God forbid, we keep little miss perfect waiting.”

~ Yacht Club ~

Dawson and Joey walk into the Yacht Club.

“I’m glad it’s a just a small get together,” Joey says, “it looks like half the school is here. It’s clearly an extracurricular school function disguised as Jen’s birthday party. I anticipate a terrible time will be had by all.”

“Joey, stop be so pessimistic I’m sure we’ll have a good time.”

Jen spots the Dawson from across the room and starts to walk over.

“Hey Dawson, I’m glad you could make it. Dawson you look really great, oh hi Joey I didn’t see you come in together,” Jen said not really paying attention to Joey, only acknowledging her existence at the last minute.

Dawson feels slightly embarrassed, but is happy Jen noticed the extra care he took tonight when selecting his ensemble, “Thanks, so you having a good time?”

“Now that you’re here I’m sure it’ll improve,” said Jen putting on an annoyingly over achieving smile.

Joey just watches on as the two pathetically flirt with each other thinking they both probably want each other back, but they’re too afraid to just come out and say it. Then she comes back to reality and remembers she’s too afraid to tell Dawson how she really feels too, so she isn’t any better off then either of them.

Dawson sees his opportunity and grabs it and asks, “Jen, would you like to dance?”

“I’d love to,” replies Jen, “oh, that’s only if Joey wouldn’t mind.”

“Jo, you don’t mind do you?” Dawson asks with a pleading look on his face.

Joey defensive states, “Yeah sure, Dawson, why would I mind it’s not like we’re going out or anything. We just came together as friends, I have no jurisdiction over who you dance with.”

Dawson hears the yeah sure and doesn’t hear a word that Joey says after that. He is elated that Jen said yes and is totally oblivious to Joey’s evident annoyance with the situation and says, “Thanks Jo, you’re the best.”

As Dawson and Jen walk away to the dance floor Joey sighs and says to herself, “If that’s true then why are you dancing with her?” She concludes the evening will be spent watching the two drawl all over each other while she just sits by and feels like a third wheel. She tells herself that watching them together will just cause her pain, but no matter what she focuses on her eyes keep wandering back to the two of them dancing. Her sense of logic kicks in and she feels that she can escape her pain if she just doesn’t see them together, so she goes out to the docks to avoid staring at them.

“Jen, I’m having an remarkably good time,” Dawson tells Jen as they slow dance.

Jen looks up into Dawson’s eyes and smiles, “Me too, Dawson.” She leans her head on Dawson’s shoulder as they begin to dance closer.

“Ladies, I have arrived!” exclaims Pacey as he enters the party. Much to his dismay no seems to care, but he’s not surprised by the response, after all he is the loser of the town. He says jokingly, “Now girls don’t crowd around me all at once,” to cover up his embarrassment of acting like an idiot when he came in. He weaved through the crowd of people looking for his friends. He locates Dawson and Jen looking cozy on the dance floor and decides not to interrupt them. After seeing those two together he knows Joey is off somewhere alone lusting after Dawson and imaging a horrible painful death for Jen. He walked over to the food table to get something to eat. As he arrived at the food he had the terrible misfortune to run into Nellie.

“Oh look what the cat dragged in,” said Nellie.

“Yeah, well I knew they allowed cats in here, but I thought there was a ‘no dogs allowed’ rule, so how’d you get in?” asked Pacey with a mock seriousness.

“Oh you’re hilarious, the only thing I find amusing about that remark is when I look up at the person saying it,” says Nellie as she laughs as her own statement.

“You know what Nellie, go bark up another tree because I’m not in the mood to deal with you right now.”

Nellie says, “What’s the matter Pacey, did you wake up from your fantasy about Miss Jacobs and you hooking up?”

Tempted to tell Nellie the truth about Miss Jacobs and him, he restrained himself in order to keep Tamara and himself out of any more trouble.

“You really need to get a life Nellie, because you say I’m a loser, but what does that make you seeing as you are keeping such close tabs on me?” asks Pacey. “The way I see it you have to be an even bigger loser then me to be interested in my sick sad life. See I’m not in denial about being a loser but you, Nellie, have to come to grips that you’re a loser too.”

“I am not a loser,” protested Nellie. “Why am I even talking to you ‘LOSER’?” Nellie says as she turns to walk away. As she walks away she says, “Besides you’re just jealous,” loud enough for Pacey to hear her, but far enough away that Pacey doesn’t have time to utter a come back. Feeling rejected and hurt from his party experience thus far, Pacey goes out onto the dock to get away from reliving his childhood, where all his father and brother did was put him down.
