Every year at Baruch College the Baruch Asian Student Union (BASU) produces an annual fashion show in celebration of Asian Heritage. Featuring song, dance, modeling, and acting, this event became a foundation for people of all Asian backgrounds to come together and work toward a goal of Asian unity through creativity, music, and fashion.

In the spring of 1997, 10 women came together during their collaboration in this traditional event and gave rise to a new sorority in which they named Kappa Phi Alpha. The founders of Kappa Phi Alpha are: Elze Elze Narvas, Pamela Chi, Miracle Ann Eraña, Robina Lee Torres, Pearl Chen, Joan Ling, Julie Dojillo, Tiffany Lam, Niki Van, and Ana Rose Ruda.

This organization, which is the first Asian Interest Sorority founded among the City University of New York (CUNY), was established on the grounds of leadership, scholarship, and social development. It was also based on the founders’ belief of giving back to the community and creating a sisterhood that would last beyond college years.

Every year we hold a formal and a Christmas semi formal in which all sisters, new and alumnae, come together and celebrate our sisterhood and successes. We are very active in Baruch’s student life, many of us being officers of various clubs such as Asian Cultural Exchange, Chinese Students Association, and Asian Students Association. And for four consecutive years, a Kappa Phi Alpha sister has produced the highly anticipated BASU Fashion Show, each year bigger and better than the last. Every year we hold a spectacular date auction to raise money for different charities. We also participate in and sponsor events such as the March of Dimes, AIDS Walk, Breast Cancer Walk, and NY Cares.

Although founded as an Asian Interest Sorority, Kappa Phi Alpha is open to individuals of all ethnic backgrounds and all academic classes, from freshmen to graduates. We are a social/service organization and welcome all who are willing to share our beliefs and enhance our sisterhood.

It is a lifetime experience of building friendship, dignity, and pride.
