Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It was named after the Roman God of War because Mars has a red surface that looks like blood. It is 142 million miles from the sun. It moves around the sun at about 15 miles a second. Mars' diameter is 4,220 miles. A day on Mars is 24 hours and 37 minutes. A year on Mars is 687 days. The atmosphere is thin and is made of 95 percent carbon dioxide, 2.7 percent nitrogen with traces of argon, oxygen, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. Mars has two potato shaped matural satellites(moons). Phobos which is 14 miles across and means fear. Deimos which is 9 miles across and means terror. Mars 38 percent of earth's gravity. Like earth, Mars has two polar ice caps. One in the north and one in the south. Ocaisionally Mars has large dust storms, they can be 4 times the size as texas. The temperature on Mars is -81 degrees farenheit. In the winter the temperature is -193 degrees farenheit. In the summer a t the equater it is 71 degrees farenheit.

Landforms on Mars

Olympus Mons is the largaest volcano in the solar system. It is 15 miles high, 3 times the size of Mt. Everest. Valles Marineris is a canyon that is the length of the distance between New York and Los Angelos. Hellas Planitia is a crater 1,000 miles wide and 4 miles deep.
