From Animal Planet's Most Extreme "Extreme Canines":
-Wolves have to be able to run 35 mph for Bison. They can Not reach 40 mph.
-Wolves smell is 100 times better than humans
-Inhale through nose, exhale out sides of nose (where slits are)
-smell and hearing finds rodents under ground. They can only dig so far under ground because of their body size
-Wolves have strong bodies, can have woolly thick coats, and splayed feet which can act like snow shoes
-Wolves have Strong determination
-they are smart and clever
-Wolves seperate out the weak or sick prey from the herd, they herd it around untill they surround it, then its dinner time. Great herding skills
-Some times at dinner it is finders keepers. Sometimes they dont want to share
-Wolves have strong socialability urges, they need to bond with each other
From Animal Planet's Animal Face-Off "Wolf Vs. Cougar":
-150lbs, 3ft tall
-8% hit rate (9 out of 10 prey get away)
-their jaws are 3 times larger then cougars and they have 42 teeth
-their jaws are designed to bite and hold on. grip
-their k9s are 1.2 inches long
-the teeth Can bite through bone
-500lb bite force (cougars have 300lbs)
-bites can damage and break the spinal cord = fatal bite but it isnt their speciality
-they can run 40mph (odd since the one above says they cant)
-they can run for 12 miles without stopping
-they have high stamina
-they have the endurance for multiple attacks where cougars are kind of one attack chance animals because of their low endurance
-they have 9000 lbs of momentium (cougar 14000lbs)
-the whole wolf pack is needed to do what the cougars claws can do

-pack life is a marathon of rejection for an omega. But is offers more security then a solitary existence, so accepts treatment.

-devote to protect, teaching and nurturing them
-as mature pups must establish new position in hierarchy
-harsh aspect of life is revealed by feeding
-senses unwelcomeness?

-Alpha dictates who will eat and when, order, submission=harmony and stability
-alpha has favorites in pack. Favorites can change (no one knows why)
-one adult looks after pups -- beta wolf.. puppy sitter and peace maker

-everything is on wolf terms (wolf vs. humans)
-beta supervises and participates in pup games. Will help intergrade pups in to hierarchy
-every vocalization from growls to whines has meaning
-status is fluid
-pack rules must be obeyed, omega must wait to eat
-can compass up to 30 pounds in a single meal. 10% of hunts are successful
howling:
pack often responds to howls & howls themselves
-howls don�t echo
each wolf has a unique howl
-omega had the lovest and most expressive voice
-communicate with neighbors?
Express joy and sorrow
-Alpha usually only male to mate
-wolves usually pair off for life
-alpha female- dominate member in female hierarchy
(female who mates with male)
-few events excite wolves like the arrival of new puppies
-gather in celebration
-other females serve as baby sitters
-puppies cared for tenderly by pack and bathed in affection
-beta wolf elects to look after the young
-entire pack helps raise and instruct
-urge to compete even when pups
-will discipline gently and teach
-everyone watches over puppies
-wolves love rocky advantage points
-wolves are curious, intelligent and bonded to family.
-paw extended... shows friendship
-devoted above all else to their family
