The Shirelles were an American girl vocal-group. Members were Shirley Alston, Doris Coley, Beverly Lee and Addie Harris. The quartet was formed in New Jersey in 1958, and during 1960-1963 they have seven top-twenty hit-singles in the US.
Their sound influenced many later groups and bands; not least the Beatles who recorded two of their songs for their first album ( “Baby It’s You” and “Boys” )
After the “British Invasion” it was difficult for the group to maintain their status as one of the most popular acts in the US, and they only had minor hits the following years.
Other complications, such as marriages in the group and disputes with their Scepter label came up during 1964. Interesting that a young Dionne Warwick subbed for two member when they took leaves to get married.
For a period after 1967 they performed as Shirley and the Shirelles, and until recent years various incarnations of the group have recorded and performed.
