When they met, he was still adjusting to the whole 'team' bit and she was a tenacious kid with powers she could barely control. Neither really knew what to do with the other at first, but when (after his presumed death aided by Amanda Sefton) Logan invaded the Hellfire Club went to try and free the X-Men, he and Kitty teamed up and started a working comraderie that's lasted for years and survived both of their worst moments. The relationship has seen more than its share of strains, but there's a core to it that has been rocked and shaken, but never broken.
