The Rose on the Rocks

I went down to the sea today

And on the rocks, I saw a rose

Cast back from the ocean waves

A quiet symbol of grief and woes

Someone's sorrows cast adrift

In their hearts to float with love

Above the graveyard of the depths

So many souls lost, death from above

The petals somewhat shrivelled

By the salt and strength of waves

Soft yet strong it stayed intact

A silent memorial to mark a watery grave

As I gazed upon the rose

Withered yet still bright and strong

To me it seemed to be a message

Despite death, love lingers on

Once long ago like the rose I was

A strong yet gentle soul

But loss had robbed me of my strength

And left me not quite whole

Perhaps the time had come for me

To cast my fears upon the waves

And let the sea cleanse heart and mind

And drop them deep amidst the graves

I went down to the sea today

And there I cast my woes

To ride the waves and pound the rocks

Until nothing remained but peace and prose

I went down to the sea today

And on the rocks I saw a rose

With the peace came understanding

And I could smile as I turned to go

This poem is a tribute to all the many souls who have lost their lives in tragedy off the coast of Nova Scotia. One of the largest was in 1998 when SwissAir Flight 111 crashed and all those aboard were lost, but it was by no means the only disaster these rocky shores have known. May they all rest in peace.
