The Farewell Tale

"Have you found what you were looking for?", Prince WideEyes, the falcon, asked king Good Rule the eagle, while they were flying together in circle.

"No, not yet" the king answered.

"See, I am looking for someone who has the bravery and nobleness, may feel the fear and the sorrow, and know even Patience and Forgiveness. And never be scared by the Future and never become sad for the Past.
And as long as I have been looking for it, I have never found all of these things joined together but once!"

"You found them once, why are you still questing?"

"That is because there may come the time when the man I have found may want to leave my house, either because he has the need of moving somewhere else, either because he cannot stand among us anymore or because of anything that will make him take this decision.
And I cannot oblige anyone in anyway to do something against his will even if I am the king!"

"I see... And where have you looked so far, then?"

"I searched among our people but no-one have I found, I searched among the elvish and the dwarven, but neither there have I found anyone. I searched among the humans and the orcs and everywhere else in the land and I haven't found one yet.
Still, I cannot give my quest up now."

Days passed before the king went back through his people... thinking he has found nothing yet.

He landed at home and heard a storm of voices growing ever more louder and louder....

So the king, with sorrow in his heart, steps out of his home and with a sudden cry makes everything and everyone quiet!

The land was all filled with silence and only one voice raised from the crowd:

"My dear Sire", he said.
"I hope that I have served you well in all of these years, and I hope you may remember me for long, 'though I know a man's actions rarely survive when he departs.

Yet I am leaving, because the time has come and I cannot stay here any longer.

Please don't try to stop me and even tell your people not to try it. As for me is with really sorrow I go away from this land and..."

But the eagle raised the wind and stopped him from speaking.

"Everybody here among my people and the outside peoples as well, know you for you truth, patience, and I may also mention your kindness and willingness to be sometimes the teacher, sometimes the friend. You have also taught me a lot, my friend.
And I have known that this time would come to pass before you spoke a single word tonight.

Anyway, I only have a word to say to you, that I know will forever remain in your heart as your presence will remain in mine, and I believe it will also, in all our people's hearts. And I know your memory will never fall into Oblivion.

So my dear friend as I see you are firmly decided to go on with your decision only this I will tell you:

"Farewell!"

The eagle king takes off his own crown and after a short fly lands on the man's shoulder.
Without a word the king places his crown on the man's head.

Tears were in all the hearts that day and the Heavens too were full of sorrow so the sky dropped all the tears they had for days and days.

In their hearts will forever survive the memory of that man wearing the king's crown that turned away from the land heading into the red sunset.

And I know those tears, as many as the grains of sand.

"Farewell!" the man said, turning back to the king.

No other words were spoken on that day and the king has been seen more than once looking at the sunset, trying to catch even the smallest shimmering of his crown heading back.

But for ages, all the people remembered the king's man only with that word one word:

"Farewell".
