Ode To Guthwulf (and the Board)

Electric wires sizzle and hum
Connecting the countries, one by one
To a unique new world that parents dread
But the kids all love, called The Web.

This world is false, but also real
Full of things you cannot feel
There is no touch, no heat, no light
No sense of time, no day or night

It has no body, it has no face
But that’s not true for a certain place
For in this world of cyber-confusion
There is one place that is no illusion

I stumbled across it one slow boring day,
When I was looking for clues on a game I play
It welcomed me in, gave me some joy
It cared not at all if I was a girl or a boy

The people all there were friendly and fun
A gang of friends who stood all for one
They’d all been seduced by this wondrous place
A cyber-tavern without a face

But that, my friends, is where I was wrong
There was a face, had been all along
The place was an image, a snapshot of soul
A glimpse of a heart that was kind as a whole

This tavern had been nade as an extension of self
And welcomed all races, dwarf, orc and elf
And what was more all this welcome was free
Supplied by a man known best as G

This man would not welcome all this praise
“It was just my job” might be his phrase
"But I disagree", I hear you say
"What you created made my day"

You made the place that attracted us in
That we filled with laughter and lots of din
You gave us all a place to call home
Where we could find we’re not all alone

So as you leave I can only say
You’ve lightened my life in a wondrous way
You’ve enabled me to find a host of friends
So its with sadness that I see it end

I hope you have joy and laughter too
In whatever it is you go off to do
And as the season pass from winter to fall
Just remember we’ll miss you, as I miss you all.
