This
is the fifth Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise. It
served almost eight years of exploration prior to its
destruction at Veridian III. Under the command of Captain Picard,
it was Starfleet's flagship from 2363–2370.

In order to produce the "Aztec" pattern, I first made up two mixtures of paint using Testors Model Master Duck Egg Blue [FS35622] and Light Ghost Grey [FS36375].

The primary colour was a 75/25 mix of Duck Egg Blue to Light Ghost Grey, and the secondary colour was 75/25 mix of Light Ghost Grey to Duck Egg Blue. The model was painted the primary colour first, and then the entire model was masked with three-inch masking tape. Then, using the embossed "Aztec" pattern on the hull as a guide, the Aztec pattern was cut, and the secondary colour mix was painted.

The masking was removed for painting the phaser banks, lifeboats and other small details, and windows were added using a fine-tipped marker.

The
Enterprise-D was commissioned on October 4, 2363, exactly 406
years after Earth launched the first artificial satellite,
Sputnik, into orbit. Like many of the Galaxy Class ships, the
Enterprise was assembled in Mars orbit.
