Radio Program Suggestions

Supplement to my Tapeable List and to my Southern California Radio List

Version 0.3 - 14 December 1999

This is a very early version of what I am hoping will soon be a comprehensive list of interesting programs available in the Los Angeles, Orange County and Riverside-San Bernardino radio markets. All are local programs, far as I can tell, unless noted. Alas, I can not record ALL of these, but will try when I can.

This list can also be seen in chart form, organized by broadcast times. There are a few programs on that list not on the one below, though most of them were suggested shows I have not yet heard, on stations I don't often receive. That does not stop me from including them...hey, I am open to suggestions on other good programs you may know about!

ANN THE RAVEN - blues and r&b, with a pleasantly spacy host: KPCC Saturday Midnight-4am
ATOMIC LOUNGE: KLON Friday 11pm-1am

CALIFORNIA ARTISTS RADIO THEATRE: KPFK Sunday 10-11:30pm
CAR TALK - talk about cars, humorously by "Click & Clack". NPR syndication via WBUR in Boston, MA: KPCC Saturday and Sunday, 9-10am (Sun. seems to be a week or two old); KVCR Saturday and Sunday, 10-11am
CHICK HEARN - last of the old-time basketball announcers...too bad it's for La Lakers: KLAC, KCKC most evenings Nov-May
COCKTAIL MUSIC HOUR: KCSN Friday 7-9pm
EUROPEAN SUNDAY CONCERT - German pop: KPCC Sunday Noon-4pm
HEARTFELT MUSIC - bluegrass, folk: KPFK Saturday 8-10am
HUMBLE HARVE - doo wop and other non-burnout oldies: KIEV Monday midnight-2am
JIM LADD - classic rock, music and other commentary: KLOS weekday evenings
KCRW PLAYHOUSE: KCRW Sunday 7-9pm
LE SHOW - political and cultural commentary, satire and other humor, hosted by Harry Shearer: KCRW Sunday 10-11am, and 6-7pm
MICHAEL JACKSON - talk, above-average for a commercial station, and an antidote to the Red-baiting on KFI in the same time-slot: KRLA 9am-noon
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - folk, humor. Syndicated by WFMT, Chicago: KUCR [regular time undetermined]
MOLOTOV COCKTAIL HOUR - music for lounge lizards: KXLU Tuesday 11pm-Mid
MY MUSIC - music trivia show, from BBC: KUSC Saturday 9:30-10pm
MY WORD - pithy word play, from BBC: KUSC Saturday 9-9:30pm
NEW DIMENSIONS: KPCC Sunday 4-5am; KPFK Tuesday 2-3pm
THE OTHER SIDE - dramatic productions by Joe Frank: KCRW Sunday 11am-Noon, and following Saturday 7-8pm
PERFORMANCE TODAY - themed (mostly) classical. Syndicated: KVCR weekdays 7-8pm, sometimes 7-9pm
PHIL HENDRIE - talk, satire of news events and talk shows: KFI weekdays 6:58pm-??

SAVVY TRAVELER - adventure travel, including phone-in. Syndication: KPCC Sunday 4-5pm
STEPHANIE MILLER - talk, political satire. Especially recommend "Stand Up News", around 7:10: KABC weekdays 7:06-10pm
THE SWINGIN YEARS - big band, swing, etc. from the 30s to late 40s. Syndicated: KPCC Saturday Noon-4pm
THISTLE & SHAMROCK - music from the exotic corners of the British Isles. Syndicated: KUSC Saturday 8-9pm
VIN SCULLY - one of the few good baseball announcers left...almost worth putting up with the Dodgers: KXTA, KCKC, KDIF most evenings, weekend afternoons Apr-Sept
WEEKEND RADIO - classical and humor. Syndicated by WCLV, Cleveland OH: KUCR [regular time undetermined]
WHAD'YA KNOW - talk, stand-up comedy and trivia quizzes. PRI syndication via WHA, Madison WI: KPCC Saturday 10am-Noon; KVCR Saturday 11am-1pm
