The Fashion Plate for dolls, Vol. 1, No. 1

May-June 2000

"Keeping you in stitches…"

As the column title conveys, my intent is to enhance your sewing experience and keep you sewing! Because sewing for dolls is on such a small scale, tools, techniques and shortcuts are sometimes much different from traditional methods. My viewpoint is the result of many years of "trials and errors"—it can be frustrating to know the results you are looking for but encounter less-than-acceptable results. The process can be fraught with unforeseen obstacles that can also discourage new doll enthusiasts or even the seasoned seamstress—I hope to show you how this experience can be interesting, enjoyable and satisfying, as well as save you money on the way to producing the results you desire.

The actual sewing is just a small part of the process. This series began with a discussion of organizing your fabrics. We continue with the subject of organizing and using your pattern collection.

Future articles will introduce basics for sewing doll fashions, including seaming secrets, closures, use of trims, special tools, methods of applying elastics, beading and embellishments, designing and drafting patterns. Step-by-step techniques can take you from beginner to advanced. I certainly don’t claim that my way is the only way and I invite your feedback, suggestions and contributions on any subject.
