CSS Florida Confederate Navy Officer William Hutcheson Jackson Ink Inscribed Image

Ink inscribed Confederate Navy officer cdv. of William Hutcheson Jackson. He is wearing his Navy officer uniform and holding his hat. He is wearing a Confederate Navy buckle on his belt which has his Confederate Navy sword attached. The reverse of the image has a De La Chaproniere Photographe ?omenade Du Front-Sud CALAIS backmark. The reverse is also ink inscribed ... J Pryor (wi)th best wishes of (your) friend W. Hutcheson Jackson CSN. Jackson was born in Virginia and was living in Maryland when war broke out. He joined the CSN on 5 June 1861 and spent most of his service on the CSS Florida. He got a bad report in 1863 and was suppose to have left the Florida but he was still on it in 1864 when a beam fell and broke his ankle. The closest person to whom William inscribed the message seems to be John H. Prior, CSN (spellings of names often varied.) Prior served on the CSS Rappanannock which was forced by engine trouble to go into the Port of Calais. It was held by the French, until the end of the war. The CSS Florida was the victim of an illegal night attack by Commander Napoleon Collins of USS Wachusett while in port in Bahia, Brazil. The captain and half the crew were ashore when the ship was attacked and captured. The Florida was towed to sea and sent to the US as a prize. She was sunk in Newport News, Virginia on November 28, 1864. William Served in the C.S. Navy as Assistant Engineer aboard the "Arkansas" in the Mississippi River in 1862. Was Engineer aboard the cruiser "Florida" in 1863 and 1864. Served on the C.S.S. "Stonewall" in 1865. Ranks Held: Lieutenant, C.S. Navy. The image measures 2 1/2" x 3 3/4". The cdv has some soiling, rounded corners, and the reverse has damage over part of the inscription. Looks like it was glued into a book and was not carefully removed. It is as just seen in the images of it. It is a great rare image. $2675
