This NYFA video presents the complete 115 minute version of the original film. It tells the story of the Jewish inhabitants of an Eastern European Ghetto face persecution. Their Rabbi works for their salvation by conjuring up a spell to bring a human shaped clay figure to life as the mythical "Golem". This was the third time Paul Wegner filmed the ancient Jewish myth which is also one of the world's first robot stories. Of note are the decidedly expressionistic set, chiaroscuro photography and Gothic lighting that Wegner employed for the first time.
