buildings, in the laying out of which, and the mastery of large gangs of men he took the lead. It was because of his ability as a constructer and manager that he was selected to build the immense car barns for the trolley companies at Hoboken and Elizabeth and other places which he did to perfection, and in record time for which he was complimented by the companies. The great difficulty in erecting these large structures was in making the immense roof self supporting and constructing a truss rafter, which has since been adopted, not only in buildings, but in bridges and other carrying structures. He learned his trade at 16 from his father after attending "The District School".
