The Hammond Family


Variations: Hammon, Hammond, Hammonds, Hammons, Hamon, Hamond

According to Eldson C. Smith, author of American Family Names (published by Harper and Row in 1973), the name Hammond is English and refers to a descendant of Hamo or Hamon (home) or to a descendant of Heahmund (cheif; protector).

First Generation

A John HAMMOND* married Mary (Cotter) COAKLEY*. John was born in England and he died at the age of 88 in England. Mary was also born in England and died at age 54 there. According to Smith, the surname Coakley has two variants: Cokeley and Cokely. Smith states that the name is English and refers to a "dweller in, or near, a wood frequented by wild birds."

John and Mary had at least one child, John F.* (A1).

Second Generation

A1 John F. HAMMOND*, Sr. and his wife Sarah Ann ALLEN* (see ALLEN) immigrated to America from England with a few of their children.

John's name is engraved on the wall at Ellis Island in New York.

John's diary and the Hammond Family Bible are currently in the possession of John's grandson, Robert Hammond*.

John was born 18 Jun. 1840 in New Castle Under Lyne, England. He died 15 Dec. 1928 of pneumonia in North Lawerence, Ohio.

John married Sarah Ann ALLEN on 23 January 1865. She was born on 9 Feb. 1845 in New Castle Under Lyne, England. Sarah died 19 Dec. 1928, four days after her husband in North Lawerence, Ohio.

John and Sarah had twelve children, although only seven lived long enough to marry. Their children: Robert S. (A11), Blanche (A12), Mary Maud (A13), Robart Allen (A14), John Freman (A15), Florence (A16), Fred Allen (A17), Chester Garfield (A18), Homar James (A19), Elsie Vilulu (A10), Earl Leone (A1a), Elmer James* (A1b).

Third Generation

A11 Robert S. HAMMOND was b. Apr. 1866

A12 Blanche HAMMOND was b.18 Jul. 1867 and she d. 17 Dec. 1867

A13 Mary Maud HAMMOND was b. 17 Dec. 1868. She m. 11 Apr. 1889 to Harvey SHRADER. Mary d. 5 Apr. 1898. Mary and Harvey's children include: Ruth (A131), Ernest Levand (A132), and Veryl A. (A133).

A14 Robart Allen HAMMOND was b. 6 Jun. 1871. He d. 20 Aug. 1871

A15 John Freeman HAMMOND was b. 30 Nov. 1872. He was m. 22 Feb. 1900 to Minnie BAIR. Minnie died Jan 1907, but supposedly, John remarried another Minnie BAIR! John's children were: Reba Minnie (A151) and Zelma Lucille (A152).

A16 Florence HAMMOND was b. 16 Jan. 1876. She d. 11 Mar 1876

A17 Fred Allen HAMMOND was b. 5 Feb 1878. He was m. 17 Aug. 1902 to Lizzie ???. Fred d. 21 Jun. 1926

A18 Chester Garfield HAMMOND was b. 2 Nov. 1880. He was m. 16 Oct. 1904 to Ethel ???. Chester and Ethel had a son, Robart Lloyd (A181).

A19 Homar James HAMMOND was b. 3 Jul. 1883. He d. 1 Sep. 1883

A10 Elsie Vilulu HAMMOND was b. 4 Dec. 1884. She was m. 8 Mar. 1908 to Alvy LAWERENCE. Elsie d. 30 May 1959. Elsie and Alvy had four children: Verda (A101), Hazel (A102), John (A103) and Mary (A104).

A1a Rev. Earl Leone HAMMOND was b. 6 Jan. 1888. He was m. 1 Sep. 1912 to May ???. Earl d. 30 May 1959 and he is buried at Newman Creek Cemetery, North Lawerence, Ohio. Earl and May had two daughters, Carol (A1a1) and Doris (A1a2).

A1b Elmer James HAMMOND*, pictured above, was b. 10 Mar. 1890 in North Lawerence, Ohio. He was m. 12 Jul. 1912 to Carrie ESHLEMAN* (see ESHLEMAN A16). Elmer d. 17 Jun. 1964 at Ephrata, PA and he is buried at the Lititz Moravian Cemetery, Lititz, PA.


Elmer & Carrie (Eshleman) Hammond

Elmer was a coal miner and a farmer. Carrie was a schoolteacher.

Their children were: Carl Elmer (A1b1), Ernest Veryl (A1b2), Reba Bernice, Mary Christine, & Robert Eugene*(my grandfather) married Wilma JeanBRUBAKER and their daughter (my mother) married a MCGUINNESS.

Fourth Generation

A132 Ernest Levand SHRADER was b. 14 Jul. 1890. He was bapt. 11 Dec. 1891.

A152 Zelma Lucille HAMMOND was b. 19 Nov. 1900.

A181 Robart Lloyd HAMMOND was (aka Bob) was born 3 Jul. 1906.

A1b1 Carl Elmer HAMMOND was b. 21 Dec. 1913 and he d. 20 Oct. 1915

A1b2 Ernest Veryl HAMMOND was b. 7 Nov. 1915 and he d. 9 Oct. 1924
