1965-1966 Super Cups

The Super Cup in Turkey was played for the first time during the amateur era, in 1944. "Türkiye Birinciği", the Turkish championship had started back in 1923 and was played in cup format and "Milli Küme", the final of regional league championships had started in 1937 and was played in league format. The prime minister Şükrü Saraçoğlu requested a game between the winners of these two national championships and the first super cup was played in 1945 as Başbakanlık Kupası. The cup was played again in 1946, 1947, and in 1950 and then discontinued when the professionalism started in İstanbul.
During 1965-1966 season, the super cup had started again. Actually not one but two super cups were introduced. Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kupası (Presidential Cup) and Başbakanlık Kupası.
Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kupası was played by the Turkish 1.League champion and the Turkish Cup Winner.
Başbakanlık Kupası was played by Turkish 2.League champion and Turkish Amateur Champion as a secondary super cup. The cups of 65-66 were played at the beginning of next season, but it is moved to the end of each season as the cup which closes the season, starting from next season.

1965-1966 2. Lig

The league was played with 21 clubs in two groups.
The league started spreading to the other cities in Turkey. The cities started creating clubs merging the city clubs and establishing professional clubs. Eskişehirspor was founded in Eskişehir, Konyaspor in Konya, Sakaryaspor in Adapazarı, Samsunspor in Samsun and Bandırmaspor in the town of Bandırma.
Sakaryaspor from Manisa who joined the league last year changed its name and got a name with its city name in the title - Manisaspor.
Toprakspor from Ankara was also added to the league.
Karşıyaka who was relegated from the 1st league two years ago because of bribery allegations, took the matter to a civil court - Danıştay - won the case and returned to the 1st league at the end of the season.

With the increase in the number of clubs, the league was played in two stages. The first stage was played in two groups with top four in each group qualifying to the second stage. Top two from the Final Group were promoted.
Relegation play-off loser Yeşildirek GK İstanbul got relegated.
