One of the well known stories of the Bible is about the woman caught in the act of adultery. That lesson, again, has surfaced but with a new and fresh meaning. My inspiration today comes from reading a passage in the Joe Gibb’s book, Race for Life. In that, Coach Gibbs brings himself and his family to the financial brink of destruction. He allowed those with different agendas become partners and he was left holding the bag of investments which went wrong. He confides in his book that when he went to reveal these issues to his wife, she reacted in a way that defies comprehension. She cast no stone, perhaps of her recognition that she was not without sin

. Over this summer a mistake left my wife and I locked out of our vehicle. Our house keys and cell phones though safe were locked inside the car also. It took about four hours to get in the car. It was a small to minor inconvenience. In the aftermath, there were never cross words, criticism or blame to be had. Certainly the profound impact of the incident weighed heavily and no amount of trash talking would change the outcome. This fact was not lost between us as it was recognized that accusations and condemnations would have certainly provided a different afternoon.

It came to and appeared clear, the comparison and similarity to the story of the adulteress was apparent. If the sin was locking the keys into the car, then let those who have never done that, cast the first stone. If absurdity or ridiculousness of allowing the keys to be locked in the car is what happens, let those of us who have never fallen to these calamities cast the first stones. If when placed in the position of being able to ridicule, condemn or accuse presents itself, let those of us in that position, cast the first stones.

When Jesus lifts His head as He did among that circle of accusers, let Him see the same thing as He did then. Let Him see the ring of stones that were all the accusations, let Him see the harshness, the condescension, the indictment. We are all with fault and need to recognize the importance of this Biblical truth in our lives. Put your stones in the circle and leave the judgment aside.
