- April 1987 Kurt, Chris and Aaron play as Nirvana on a radio show for KAOS, the radio station at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. Some songs they play are: "Love Buzz," "Floyd the Barber," "Mexican Seafood," "Hairspray Queen," and "Downer"
- September 1987 Kurt moves into his girlfriend Tracy Marander's apartment at 114 North Pear Street, Olympia.
- January 23, 1988 The group with Dale Crover replacing Burckhard record a ten-song session at Reciprocal Studios in Seattle with Jack Endino. Three of these appear on Bleach
- February 1988 the tape of demos is given to Jonathan Poneman of Sub Pop records. he loves the songs and gets the band interested in doing a single for Sub Pop
- Spring 1988 The band rehearses with Dale Crover, Aaron Burkhard, and Dave Foster before deciding to have Chad Channing as Nirvana's drummer
- November 1988 Sub Pop releases the first Nirvana single, "Love Buzz"/"Big Cheese"
- December 1988 Nirvana begins sessions with Jack Endino at Reciprocal Studios for the tracks that will make up their first album, Bleach
- February 1989 Nirvana becomes a quartet with the addition of guitarist Jason Everman. Everman does not play on Bleach, but he puts up the money for its recording
- June 15, 1989 Bleach is released on Sub Pop. The group begins its first extensive U.S. tour. The tour is cut short because of conficts with Everman. When they return to Seattle, Everman is no longer a member of Nirvana
- August 1989 The band records its "Blew" EP sessions with producer Steve Fisk at Music Source Studios in Seattle
- October 20, 1989 Nirvana starts their first European tour with the band TAD

- January-March 1990 The band plays throughout California and the Northwest U.S.
- April 1990 The band spends a week recording demo sessions at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, with producer Butch Vig. Among recorded tracks are: "In Bloom," "Dive," "Lithium" and the version of "Polly" that would be on Nevermind
- May 1990 The band goes on its second major U.S. tour. At the end of the tour, Kurt and Krist fire Chad Channing. Dale Crover fills in for a seven-date West Coast tour.
- July 11, 1990 The band records "Sliver" with producer Jack Endino. Mudhoney's Dan Peters fills in on drums
