Skye

10/24/1994 - 11/30/2002

She was only 8 years old when she left us on November 30, 2002 almost 4 weeks ago. She was a mix-husky/lab and my very first dog ever. My son gave her to me for Christmas 1994. She was just 7 weeks old. I never thought I would ever love a pet the way I loved Skye. She was a part of my family. We did not do anything without including Skye. My older son had moved away and bought a rat terrier, (Thurman) and when he moved back home, he brought Thurman with him. Skye got along with him fine. She thought he was her baby. Our life was complete. (My husband and I have three grown children). Until this May.

Skye started to limp. The vet said she probably tripped, it’s nothing. A couple pf weeks later she was still limping. The other vet in the same office said the same thing. At the end of June we decided to see another vet. This time we had x-rays taken. Both of the vets in the new office said “let’s wrap her leg for a couple of weeks, and she will be fine.” We did. Nothing helped, including medication. I decided to send her x-rays to a radiologist. The results- negative. Nothing is wrong with her leg. Meanwhile Skye wasn’t herself. She was still limping to the point where she was not using her leg at all. (The front right).

In August we took her yet to another vet. As soon as we walked in, the new vet said “there is something wrong with her shoulder, not her leg. We had a series of x-rays taken and sure enough they found bone cancer in her shoulder. They told us our options were to have her leg amputated or put her down. We opted with surgery, of course, hoping to buy her some time.

On September 4th she had her surgery and she came through with flying colors. She came home on the 6th and we had Skye back. She was a trooper. She did not have any problems walking on three legs. In no time she was chasing squirrels again. She was doing ok for about 6 weeks. Then she started to act sick again. After more x-rays they found the cancer had spread to her lungs. After that she started going down hill. We kept hoping she would be here for at least Christmas, but the last week she started crying at times. At this point she had a tumor growing on her back and it was getting bigger every day.

Now also find out that on top of all her problems, she has arthritis on her spine. My poor, poor Skye.

My family kept telling me that it’s time, but I could not accept it. I could not imagine life without Skye. But, by the last week I even could not let her go on. I had to face it.

So we took her for her last ride. She died very peacefully. Now our home is empty without our blue eyed Skye. We miss her terribly. We will always love you puppy girl.
