About 35 km from Bonavista we come to Kings's Cove, one of the oldest settlements on this part of the peninsula. King's Cove was settled by Bonavista fishermen in the mid 1700's and grew quickly in size and importance. In fact King's Cove was locally known as the "Athens of the North" because of its commercial activity.
One of the first places that draws our attention as we arrive in King's Cove is the church on a hill overlooking the harbour.
This afternoon there is very little activity near the harbour but the smell of the sea and the beautiful scenery forces us to get out of the car and enjoy our surroundings.
We leave King's Cove reluctantly and drive back to Stock Cove and cross on Route 236 to the Port Rexton - Trinity area. This route takes us past Lockston Path Park where it is possible to stop for a swim and a "mug up". While we are in the area we
decide to drive over to New Bonaventure to visit the community of "Cape Random" that was built as a set for the Random Passage TV mini series. The set was also used for background scenes for the movie "The Shipping News"
This was the home of the most affluent family at Cape Random. The pictures below show the wharf and fishing premises of the fictitious "Cape Random." A small cemetery, old fences, annimal droppings, etc., make the scene come alive, especially to those who have read the novel. It also makes you aware of the hardship and isolation the early settlers in this area must have experienced.

Leaving "Cape Random" we bypass the old historic Town of Trinity which we will visit at a later date. Soon we are driving through Port Rexton, Trinity Bay(Photos below).
