Driving back toward Catalina we decide to take a short detour down to Sandy Beach by way of Eliston. As usual, the beach has quite a crowd of people enjoying the sand, sun, and water. There are also quite a number of campers enjoying the adjacent Municipal Park.

Leaving Sandy Beach we drive through Elliston and take a short detour to Spillars Cove (photo below)before arriving back in Bonavista.
Back home again,we park our car, and take a walk around O'Dea's Pond on the new boardwalk that was partially completed last fall and winter. Quite a number of people now use the BoardWalk as part of their regular walking program. Since the old sewage plant has been removed and the area cleaned up, many people now visit this area and even the birds that used to frequent the pond, e.g. sandpipers (beach birds), curlews, red legs and various types of gulls, appear to have returned. The pond has also become the summer home and nesting place for numerous wild ducks.

To finish up the day we take a trip down to Cape Bonavista to take a picture of John Cabot as he gazes out over the area. Of course this is only an excuse to stop and sample one of the delicious custard (soft serve) cones that can be purchased at the drive-in on the Cape.
Then, we rush back to Bonavista to get one final picture - a gorgeous sunset. What an ending to an afternoon of sightseeing on the Bonavista peninsula.
