There something I’ve been thinking about ever since I saw Outlaw Star first came on CN. I figured "Hey, I’m an anime fan. I’ll watch it just to see what it’s like." So I turn it on the day that Gene (don’t ask, I don’t have I clue how to spell it, so shut up) was fighting one heavily trained mercenary every two minutes. Granted, I’ve never seen the original "Outlaw Star" but I really wanna know what’s going on here. I turned it on, watched Gene get the high holy snot kicked out of him, and then he came back to his base (or wherever) hunky doory. Then his loser friends come in and say something regarding pirates and then suddenly he puts his hand on Gene’s back, looks at his hand, and says (sorry about the language...it’s direct quoting) "What the hell is this?". He looks directly at his hand, and there is nothing on it folks…nothing. I have never seen such a screwed up way of dubbing in my life. Granted FUNimation was pretty bad, but they evened it out. They either showed some blood and no cussing, or no blood and no cussing. I gotta tell you it kinda messed me up until I realized what it was supposed to be on his hand when Gene kieled over. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate the "once on a daily basis" cussing thing on Outlaw Star, but what I don’t understand is if they can show cussing why can’t they show blood? Also, if they can show cussing, why in every episode of Outlaw Star when anyone says "Kill" they change it to "Destroy" or "Get". Suzuka is in the middle of a serious fight with some guy who wants to kill Gene and Suzuka says that she will take care of that later and until then she won’t let him do it (or something to that effect). The scene is supposed to be serious and intense. When they say stuff like "No I’M going to get Gene first!!" where as soon as they say "get" you hear the tone of their voice go up it ruins the mood of it. As they go through it they got better at dubbing and you don’t see as many stupid mistakes.

Bottom Line : Outlaw Star could be a sweet show if the dubbing wasn’t so...obvious and pointless. I’ve actually enjoyed watching the show regardless of the dubs (which I guess means that the original should be pretty sweet). Although this does mean that from now on FUNimation doesn’t have many more excuses not to show cussing in the dub. Overall, I really like Outlaw Star, it’s just that the dubbing sucks.
