Word History
A friend is a lover, literally. The relationship between Latin amicus “friend” and amo “I love”
is clear, as is the relationship between Greek philos “friend” and phileo “I love.”
In English, though, we have to go back a millennium before we see the verb related to friend.
At that time, freond, the Old English word for “friend,” was simply the present participle of
the verb freon, “to love.” The Germanic root behind this verb is *fri–, which meant “to like, love,
be friendly to.” Closely linked to these concepts is that of “peace,” and in fact Germanic made
a noun from this root, *frithu–, meaning exactly that. Ultimately descended from this noun are
the personal names Frederick, “peaceful ruler,” and Siegfried, ”victory peace.”
The root also shows up in the name of the Germanic deity Frigg, the goddess of love, who lives on
today in the word Friday, “day of Frigg,” from an ancient translation of Latin Veneris dies, “day
of Venus.”
A Friend is......
A friend is someone who supports you all the time...
A friend is someone who does not compete with you...
A friend is someone to call upon during good times
A friend is someone to call upon during bad times...
A friend is someone who is genuinely happy for you when things go well
A friend is someone who knows what you are going through at all times..
A friend is someone who refuses to listen to gossip about you
A friend is someone who understands what ever you do...
....A friend is someone who tells you the truth about yourself
If...
If one day, you feel like crying..
Call me.
I don't promise you that..
I will make you laugh
But i can cry with you
If one day you want to run away-
Don't be afraid to call me.
I don't promise to ask you to stop,
But i can run with you.
If one day, you don't want to listen to anybody;
Call me and...
I promise to be very quiet
But....
If one day you call and there is no answer...
Come fast to see me...
Perhaps I need you...
I've learned...
That just one person saying to me, 'You've
made my day! really makes my day.
That I can always pray for someone when I don't have
the strength to help him in some other way.
That no matter how serious your life requires you to
be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold
and a heart to understand.
That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants
to be appreciated and loved.
That the Lord didn't do it all in one day.
What makes me think I can?
You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't
matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is
still there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical
one.
Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you
smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear,
they share words of praise and they always want to
open their hearts to us.
