| Tribute Band Review |
Tunbridge Wells rocks to the sound of Fleetwood Bac
I had the pleasure to attend a concert by a UK tribute band to Fleetwood Mac
called Fleetwood Bac on the 26th July 2001 at the Forum in Tunbridge Wells,
Kent.
The five members of the band all kitted themselves out in their
respective namesakes attire but this tribute band go a little further then just
dressing up as Fleetwood Mac, they managed to sound quite like the Mac when
Fleetwood Mac were performing in their heyday of the late seventies and early
eighties. The sound was very powerful and Fleetwood Bac played a raw on the edge
set just as I like it.
The set opened with "The Chain" with the bass player getting the part
right and the guitar rocking, next we had a Stevie song "Gold Dust
Woman" and then "Second Hand News", "Seven Wonders" and
then "I'm So Afraid where again the guitar was spot on with the long guitar
solos and the correct drum and bass line so like Lindsey's awesome rendition.
Next up came a Stevie favorite that I'm afraid that the real Fleetwood Mac or
Stevie herself fail to play anymore "Sara", this song was sang with
all the warmth that Stevie herself prides herself in. Fleetwood Bac then
surprised the crowd with a song that goes back to the Peter Green era "Oh
Well", "Silver Springs" followed and then one of the highlights
of the show was played where Fleetwood Bac played "Beautiful Child",
this song has never been performed live by Fleetwood Mac and Fleetwood Bac
performed it admirably, it was a real treat to hear this song.
Next up was a rendition of Lindsey's "Big Love" where the guitar player actually played the song in the same style as The Dance version and does not use a pick much like Lindsey Buckingham. "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" was performed next and then the tempo slowed with "Landslide" being played. The show then went back to the Peter Green era with a rendition of "The Green Manalishi", now someone in the band has been doing their homework as at the end of the song when the guitar solo starts, Stevie began wailing like Fleetwood Mac performed the song after Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had joined the band in 1975, not many people would pick up on this sort of detail but it nice to see that Fleetwood Bac try to keep the set as authentic as possible.
The tempo slowed again as "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" was played and then picked up again as "Gypsy" was performed, next up again was a step back to the blues era with "Need You Love So Bad" after that was "Dreams" and then the second highlight of the show was "Sisters Of the Moon", only one word for this - awesome, the band have obviously been watching the 1982 video of Fleetwood Mac in Concert where this was performed again the performance was raw and the guitar kicked in all the right places. "Don't Stop was performed next and Christopher McVie (I'm afraid Chris's part is taken by a man) managed to get a keyboard solo on this number, next up was the final number "Go Your Own Way" which again showed signs of watching the 1982 video of Fleetwood Mac in Concert.
The band then left the stage and were forced to come back on from the noise from the crowd, they then performed "Rhiannon" which started slow with just the vocal and the piano and built up into the heavy guitar solos and the screaming from Miss Nicks. The last number of the night was "Tusk" which allowed the drummer his moment in the spotlight with a drum solo that Mick Fleetwood would have been proud off.
All in all the show was an excellent two hours of entertainment, you don't have to be a Fleetwood Mac nut like me appreciate it and have a good time, but if you are I am sure you will be pleased with the way these five people perform all your favorite Mac songs. I for one cannot wait to the next time.
