Chapter Fifteen
“AJ, we have to talk.”
“I know. I was just waiting for this. You love Nick. You want him, not me. What happened was a mistake.” When AJ’s eyes met mine I quickly looked away. “You know I would never hurt you.” He held my chin and turned my head to face him. He hit me where it counted. “I would never cheat on you.”
“How could you say that?”
“Nikki, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just want you to know that I would do that.” I pretty much avoided AJ the rest of the day. I went to Brian’s house. I had to get away.

“So when are you going to tell Nick that you forgive him?”
“I’m not sure. He’s called a few times, but I wouldn’t talk to him. I think if I saw him I’d take him back in a heartbeat.”
“Well, you know, Nick comes over here often. He might come by today.”
“Oh, I hadn’t thought about that. What do I do if he comes here?”
“I don’t know, Nik, but if I’m not mistaken, that’s his Durango pulling into my driveway right now.”
“Shit. What do I do?”
“Do whatever feels natural.”
“Bri, tell me the truth. Did you know he was cheating on me?”
“No. I think I believe him when he says that was the first time anything happened.” Just as Brian finished that comment, Nick walked in.
“Man, you look like crap.” Which he did.
“Thanks, Bri.” He smiled weakly.
“Nikki, can we please talk? I’ve tried to call, but AJ keeps giving me excuses. Please. I love you. I never meant to hurt you. It was an accident. That was the only time that happened, and we didn’t have sex.” I was sitting on the couch. Nick was now kneeling in front of me. “Please, baby girl. I want to make this work.” His words seemed sincere, and his eyes showed the same.
“I love you, and I’m willing to give you another chance.” With the words barely out of my mouth, Nick had jumped into my arms. He was sitting next to me and holding me tightly.
“You won’t regret this. I promise.” I closed my eyes and smiled as I took in the feeling of being in Nick’s arms again. I just hoped he was right, and I wondered how he would feel when or if he found out about what happened between AJ and me.
