Isaac took Zac to the hospital 2 weeks later. He couldn’t see her like she was right away. Ike took Zac up. “You ready?” Zac nodded. He opened the door. Sarah was getting much worse. She was getting a little bluer in color. “Zac!” Sarah said excitedly. “Sarah!” Zac said but stayed away. Looking at all the tubes running in and out of her body freaked him out. She looked fragile to him. “What’s wrong Zac? You know I need hug!” He slowly walked over to her. “Are you ok?” “Yes! Of course, I have to stay fit to keep up with you pooky!” She said messing with him. He walked over to her and hugged her tight. She looked at Isaac at the door and gave him the look and he left the room.
“Zac?” She said pulling back. “You can’t die, please don’t.” This started Sarah’s waterworks going. “Zac honey, don’t think like that yet. There’s still he chance that I might get a heart.” Sarah knew the chances of that really were zero but she didn’t want to destroy him yet. “No you won’t, don’t lie to me. Just because I’m young does not mean I’m stupid!” She pulled back and looked at him. The door opened again, “Sarah?” “Oh hey Micky! Come on in!” Zac turned around and turned back to Sarah. “You know Micky, can you hang on one minute outside?” “Yeah sure!” She said walking out of the room. She hugged Zac, “don’t worry, everything will be ok. Besides, look!” And she moved her hair back. She was wearing the earrings Zac got her. He grinned, “why are you wearing them?” “Because you gave them to me! They are my lucky charm!” He grinned and then stopped. “You have to promise not to tell Isaac.” “Tell him what?” Sarah asked. Zac leaned over and kissed her on the lips. Sarah freaked out and backed up against her pillow. “What was that for?” Zac turned a deep shade of red. He ran out of the room.
Micky came into the room. “Where was he going in a hurry?” Sarah just shrugged, “I think I upset him.” But Sarah figured it out, that wasn’t Taylor’s journal she should have known the writing was not his. It was Zac’s. She really had to talk to him later. “Anyway, I got you the good food.” “YEAH!” Sarah said and grabbed a fry. “Micky, I love you really.” She laughed, “so anyone else coming?” Micky asked Sarah. “Well, my friends were going to stop by after school. I don’t think they are taking this too well.” “What about you?” “What about me?” “How are you taking this?” “Well, I’ve been through this before. I don’t know, I figured that if I was meant to stay on this earth the heart would have worked out.” “How can you stay so calm and ok about this?” She stopped chewing and swallowed. “Well, in all honesty is scares the living hell out of me beyond all belief. I don’t want to die. I’m leaving some awesome people and experiences behind. But I really don’t have a choice. It’s not like I can say, ‘gee I don’t feel like dying so I’m not going too!’” Sarah said chomping down on another fry. “Well, I talked to Cass. She said that if she could she would try to come down soon and so did Nsync. And your mother told Nick what was going on so some of them might come down.” Sarah leaned her head back into the pillow. “Ok, thanks.” “You don’t sound to thrilled about the whole thing?” She grinned, “I don’t know . . . I like everyone coming to visit but I just don’t like them seeing my looking like crap.” Micky grinned, “you do no matter what.” “Thanks!” Sarah said grinning.
She stopped eating it was giving her chest pains. Later that day they were going to start feeding her intravenously because she was getting chest pains swallowing. The doctors said that takeout was fine for the last time she’d get to eat normal food. “Micky?” “Yeah?” She said reading some of her Biology textbook while Sarah was going to eat. “Thanks.” “For what?” “For skipping school to be here. Even though I basically hated you you’re here hanging with me.” “Yeah! Any friend of Cassie’s is a friend of mine.” She said going back to her textbook. “I’m done, could you throw this away please?” “Sure, but you’ve barely eaten anything. And you are getting thinner! That’s so not cool, I demand you eat the Quarter Pounder or I will.” Micky said grinning book marking her page and putting the book down. “Thank you really but I can’t eat anymore. It’s hurts to swallow.” “Again?” Micky said. Sarah nodded, “well, ok. But next time listen to me. Cheeseburgers are safer, and have less calories.” Sarah grinned, “oh yes, I just have such a fat ass.” “Don’t I know it.” Micky said giving her a horrific look jokingly. “Hey, would you mind getting Isaac for me?” “Sure. I’ll read outside because I really should get this. Besides, eventually you’ll become one with the ecosystem.” Sarah shook her head “you’re an idiot.” “Thanks, I try!” She walked out with her book, Quarter Pounder, and Isaac walked in. “Hey babes, what’s up?” “Sit down.” He did, “yes mother!” He said grinning. “I’m not joking right now.” He just looked at her. “Look, I know I’m not going to live for another couple of days. I can feel my heart getting weaker and I notice it in other parts of my body. I’ll be lucky if I live to tomorrow. I need you to do something for me.” “Anything! What is it?” “Zac is not going to take this well. You may here some things that surprise and shock you. But let it go. Just help the poor thing ok? Also, in a green and yellow box in my closet there is some stuff in there I want you and you alone to have. There is another box that is pink and silver. That is for all of you ok? Open it when all of you are around got that? Now my parents are going to go through everything and then offer stuff to my friends. If you might actually want something go for it and take it. You have more use for it then I will then!” She said trying to keep in good humor. “Alright I will go there after this and go and get the boxes alright?” “Ok, that’s fine with me. Oh wait, get them later tonight." Isaac nodded.
