Chapter 37

Sarah woke up. She scratched her nose and this caused her to gag. Tubes were going through her nose. Sarah freaked out. “What in the hell?” She said aloud. She rang for a nurse with the emergency button. Within seconds a nurse came in. “Is something the matter.” Sarah nodded. “What’s wrong with me?” The nurse left and a doctor came into the room and pulled a chair up to her bed. “Some people are here to see you.” “That’s wonderful really, why do I have tubing coming out of me?” The doctor took a deep breath. “Your heart is being rejected. I’m surprised you have lived this long. There is nothing we can do but wait to see if you can get another heart transplant.” Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “What if there isn’t one?” The doctor looked down and then looked back up. “You will die in a couple of weeks.” The blood drained from her face as well.

The doctor came out. “She said she would like visitors now.” Her parents stood up. The other three stayed sitting and were going to wait until her parents came out. Ike fingered the necklace and the ring. He closed his eyes and had thoughts from when they first met to times up to now. He began to get a terrible migraine. With this being the second time he’s had to deal with this with Sarah he thought he would be used to this. He was regretting fighting with her and the whole incident at the hotel. He still didn’t know whether or not to believe her but it didn’t matter. They both loved each other and she doesn’t or didn’t love Nick.

About and hour later her parents came out of the room. “She’s really tired but wants to see you. If you wouldn’t mind please cut it short and let her rest.” All three nodded. “Excuse me, but I’ll see her tomorrow, would you mind taking me home?” Zac asked. Her parents nodded and he left with them. Taylor and Ike knew that this was killing him. Ike made a mental promise to take him whenever he wanted tomorrow to go see Sarah.

Taylor walked out of her room. Seeing her like that killed him. She was so cool, and they were such good friends. Ike was still out in the waiting room waiting for his brother to come out. Taylor made it 10 minutes. “Hey bro. It’s your turn. She’s rather upbeat so don’t depress her.” Ike stood up and quickly ran to her room. He opened the door and she was sitting up crying. “Sarah?” She looked up and quickly stopped. “I thought you both were going to leave.” “Not without me saying goodbye first. Why are you crying?” She looked at him sourly. “Hmm, take your pick. My brand new heart is failing for no reason, I’m not going to get another one, and I’m going to die within a matter of weeks.” “I meant the question rhetorically.” “Oh, sorry Ike.” She beckoned for him to come over to her. He stood next to her bed. She patted the bed, “sit your blond ass down bud.” He laughed a little and sat next to her. They both looked in each other’s eyes. She leaned over and hugged him “I love you Isaac” she said weeping.

Ike started tearing up a bit, “I love you too Sarah.” “I’m so sorry for everything, please forgive me.” “You didn’t even have to ask. I already did.” She clutched him tighter “I’m so scared. I have never been more scared ever. I wish I could redo everything.” She sniffled and then remembered the tubing. She started to choke and cough. “Calm down Sarah, your hurting yourself.” He grabbed her hand and held it calming herself down. She calmed down and looked at her hand in his. “My fingertips, they’re blue.” Ike noticed the same thing. “Your lips are too.” She just looked at him, “why me Isaac?” He just looked at her. “I don’t know.” She just hugged him again. She pulled back just a little. “Thank you for everything, helping with my bills, being here for me. Even though I have done nothing but ignore you and treat you like garbage.” “Its done and over Sarah. Just completely forget about it.” She leaned back against the bed. Her arms slid down his neck and felt something cool. “Who gave you the necklace?” Ike pulled it out and the diamond’s reflection cause rainbows to be reflected all around them. Sarah didn’t say anything at first. Then she pulled the necklace around her neck up. Ike saw that his silver ring was strung on it. “You kept it.” She said quietly. “You kept mine.” “Yeah.” Was all she managed to say. He took the ring off his necklace and put it back on her finger. “Not this again Isaac.” “No, just take it, it was yours to begin with. You are the only one that deserves to wear it.” She took the ring off her necklace as well. She placed the ring on his middle finger. Isaac took it off and moved it over to the ring finger. “It was a little snug on the other one anyway.” She giggled a little bit. She leaned over to hug him but he put his head down lower and kissed her instead.
