There are many reasons Lhasas are popular
household pets. Their comparatively small size
makes them ideal for people who want an indoor dog
or just don't have the room or yard that a larger
dog needs. Each breed has its own space and
exercise requirements. It would not be fair for a
large, active dog such as an Irish setter or German
shepherd to be cooped up in an apartment all day
long with little chance for exercise. Neurotic and
destructive habits usually develop under these
conditions. However, a Lhasa apso can prosper in a
relatively confined environment with limited
exercise. A daily walk on a leash or a romp in the
yard will keep them in good spirits and maintain
physical fitness. Lhasas are generally content to
be guardians of the castle. By their nature and
breeding, they are excellent watch dogs. Their
alertness and ability to distinguish friend from
foe are keenly developed traits dating bck hundreds
of years to when they were sentinel dogs for the
imperial families of Tibet and China.
Well-bred Lhasas should have and even, good-natured
temperament. They thrive on human contact and
enjoy being considered part of the family, although
they tend to be stadoffish and wary of strangers.
Some Lhasas can become aggressive, strong-willed,
and may try to dominate the house-hold. This
reflects poor breeding and improper training.
Therefore, be very wary of breeders who do not
select for desirable personality traits.
Plan on spending at least on hour per week washing
and grooming your Lhasa. If you start when your
Lhasa is a young puppy, grooming will develop into
an emotionally satisfying experience for you and
your pet. Your Lhasa will eagerly look forward to
the grooming sessions. From time to time, you may
elect to take your Lhasa to a professional groomer
for styling, dipping, and bathing. Since Lhasa
have long, thick coats that become easily matted,
you may decide to keep your pet clipped for easier
care.
To sum up, Lhasa apsos are one of the most popular
breeds in my opinion. They are hardy, alert, and
adapt well to modern urban life-styles. They are
loved by families with children and elderly
retirees alike. They can be easily carried and are
happy to be confined indoors. Despite their small
size and teddy-bear appearance, they ar dedicated,
loyal guardians of the household.
