PATRIOT GIRLS PREP FOR SCOTLAND BATTLE
By Charlie Bergman: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, April 11th, 2008
There will be a lot on the line for the Pinecrest and Scotland County girls' soccer teams when they meet at the John Williams Athletic Complex on Monday at 7 p.m.
The Patriots bring in a record of 11-1-1 overall and 8-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference after defeating Douglas Byrd 10-0 on Wednesday. The Scots are 12-1 and 7-1, with their only loss a 6-2 defeat to the Patriots in Laurinburg last month.
"That was the most competitive 6-2 game I can remember," Pinecrest coach Larry Martin said, recalling a number of near-miss scoring chances by the Scots that could have made things closer. "As far as I'm concerned, Monday's game is the most important of the season to date. In order to win the conference outright, and secure the No. 1 seed for the conference, we're going to have to beat them again."
As in Monday's victory at Seventy-First, Martin used a combined varsity-junior varsity squad to defeat Douglas Byrd 10-0 because a number of varsity players were away on spring break trips.
All of the goal-scoring was accomplished by two freshmen and a sophomore. Freshman Kate Hieronymus found the back of the net four times. Ashlyn Douglas, another first-year player, and sophomore Rebecca Dupre each recorded a hat trick.
Contributing assists were Bailey Pages (two), Lauren Bonville (two), Dupre and Katie Letsinger. Sarah Dejak was in the goal for the Pats' eight shutout victory of the season.
Pinecrest has outscored conference opponents 71-3. Excluding the Pinecrest match, Scotland has a 61-3 edge over its league foes.
"With Megan Brigman and some other real quick players, Scotland is very dangerous," Martin said. "But we're capable of playing the same kind of defense we did last time, and taking advantage of our scoring opportunities.
The bottom line is, I expect a very competitive match."
