CAIN CLAIMS PHS GOAL MARK
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Sunday, April 16th, 2006
Pinecrest girls’ soccer coach Lorna Martin sensed that Latanya Cain was under some pressure as the time went by in Thursday afternoon’s home match against Lee County.
The relief came in the 43rd minute of the game. The sophomore danced and weaved through the Yellow Jacket penalty area with the ball before depositing her 34th goal of the season into the net.
That broke the team’s single-season mark of 33 previously held by Laura Peters, Lauren Broderick and Cain. The goal was the third for the Patriots in what turned into a 4-1 victory.
The other goals for Pinecrest, now 14-3-1, were scored by Ann Fields, Molly Lynch and Kelly Guarente.
“I’m very proud of Latanya,” said Martin, who reached a landmark of her own recently with her 200th career victory as the Pinecrest coach. “I’m glad she got that goal because the pressure is off. Now she can just move on and play.”
The game time, on the warm pre-spring break afternoon, was moved up to 4 p.m. to accommodate the visiting team. Before a sparse crowd, Sarah Patnode sent a long cross into the Jacket penalty area in the fifth minute. When the ball was bobbled by the Jacket goalkeeper, Lynch was in the right spot to put it away.
In the 11th minute, Cain was taken down from behind just above the left corner of the penalty box. Fields took the free kick and buried it in the upper-right corner for a 2-0 Patriot lead.
The Jackets closed the gap with just over a minute left in the half after Patriot goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell rushed off her line to collect a ball, but came up empty. Heather Dickens was the beneficiary, kicking the ball into the open net.
Cain gave Pinecrest some breathing room with her sashay through the penalty area before scoring near the start of the second half. Guarente’s first-touch goal off a rebound in the 75th minute completed the scoring.
“I just wanted to do it with a bang,” Cain said of the stylish effort. “It had to be a good one.”
Cain now has 67 career goals in a little more than a season and a half.
She is currently in contention for the state’s Olympic Development team for her age group, with one cut remaining. She plays off-season soccer with the Charlotte Soccer Club.
She thinks she benefited from the opportunity to play with Broderick on last year’s Patriot team.
“Lauren was a great player,” she said. “She was like a role model. I just wanted to do what she did and I’d like to get a lot more goals.”
