PATRIOT GIRLS ROCK RAIDERS

If visiting Richmond County was encouraged by the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team’s close call at Scotland County Monday, it quickly got the wind taken out of its sails.
The Patriots’ Ann Fields powered home a rebound off a shot by Latanya Cain in the fifth minute of the match. They scored three more goals in the next 10 minutes, all by Cain, before coach Lorna Martin removed almost all of her starters.
Cain finished with four goals and an assist, and Fields notched two goals and an assist in the 7-1 Patriot victory. The 60th straight Mid-Southeastern Conference victory in a row, going back to the 2002 season, improves them to 3-0 in the league and 5-2 overall. The loss drops the Raiders to 2-1 and 4-4.
Pinecrest had to go to overtime to defeat Scotland 3-2 on Monday. Cain thought that might have had something to do with the team’s crisp passing and high energy from the first minute against the Raiders.
“That Scotland game really killed us,” she said. “Coach Cuevas (assistant coach Hector) kind of worked us hard in practice the next day. We knew that if we didn’t play better in this game, we were really going to be in trouble.
“I think we wanted to take it out on somebody, and we definitely took it out on Richmond today.”
With the Patriot starters back in the game at the start of the second half, Fields roared down the middle, splitting a trio of Raider defenders, and scored in the 49th minute, making it 5-0. The Raiders’ Amber Teeters spoiled the shutout with a goal a few minutes later.
Cain added her fourth goal, 14th of the season, in the 60th minute. Teammate Molly Lynch completed the scoring in the 68th minute.
Katelyn Burwell and Morgan Saunders divided the goalkeeping for the Patriots. Each recorded one save. The Patriots travel to Hoke for a 7 p.m. conference match on Monday.
The Pinecrest junior varsity improved to 2-0 in the conference and 4-2 overall with a 1-0 victory over Richmond.
