Another exclamation point was put on the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team’s domination of the Mid-Southeastern Conference in Monday night’s 8-0 rout of second-place Jack Britt.
On a day that the Patriots returned to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association 4-A top-10 rankings (tied for 10th), they took a 5-0 lead over the Buccaneers in the 20th minute and coasted the rest of the way.
Freshman LaTanya Cain had another big night for the home team with a hat trick and an assist. Senior Lauren Broderick scored twice and also contributed an assist for the Patriots, now 14-1-2 overall and 10-0 in conference play.
The Bucs’ second loss of the season to the Patriots dropped them to 12-3-1 and 8-2-1.
With Cain, Broderick and Katie Fields operating in the forward positions, it became quickly apparent that the Buc defense was in for a long night.
“We figured out they were pulling up,” Broderick said of the Buc strategy. “We wanted to make sure we were making long balls to the corners and then taking them on one by one. They thought by pulling up they would pull us off sides. They were actually hurting themselves because of our speed up top.
“We made a lot of good passes and we played well as a team.”
And so the Patriots went about attacking the Buc offside trap — quickly and almost painlessly.
In the fifth minute, Patriot defender Lora Smith found Broderick all alone on the left wing. With the opposing fans hollering for an offside call to no avail, Broderick had only goalkeeper Keianna Evans to beat. She did so with a sharp move. That left her with an open net in front of her and she walked it in.
About a minute later, Broderick slipped a ball into space behind the defense to Cain, who took it the final 30 yards for a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later it was Fields linking up with Cain in a similar manner for the third goal.
Broderick connected on a swerving kick with her left foot from about 25 yards out in the 16th minute for her 83rd career goal. Cain’s third goal of the match in the 20th minute was her 23rd of the season, tying Broderick’s record for the most goals by a Patriot freshman.
“We were a little surprised,” Patriot coach Lorna Martin said, “that they played us the same way they did the last time knowing how fast our forwards are. The teams that we have trouble with are the ones that pack the box — which isn’t a fun game to play.”
The Patriots took a 6-0 lead into the intermission after Stephanie Carter headed home a Brittney Dishner cross in the 34th minute.
The second-half goals came on a kick from about 25 yards out by Molly McGahey and one by Molly Lynch via another Dishner assist. The Bucs were able to generate only one shot in the match, that on a first-half direct kick by Renee Anderson.
Broderick’s seventh assist of the season increases her Patriot career-leading total to 41. She is second in the career department in goals to the 89 made by Jordan Howell (1997-2000). She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall.
“She’s a team leader,” Martin said, “and she never stops playing. She plays through pain and constantly gives it her all.”
The Patriots continue their bid for an eighth consecutive conference title at Westover tonight at 7 p.m. Monday’s win was their 52nd in a row in conference play.
The move into the top 10 sets up an interesting match on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at fifth-ranked Apex (13-1-1). On the Patriots’ other trip to Raleigh this season, they defeated then-fourth-ranked Southeast Raleigh 3-2.
Broderick thinks the match provides another opportunity to experience a state playoff quality opponent.
“It’s going to be an extremely tough game,” she said, “but we’re excited to be playing them.”
Katelyn Burwell was in the net for the Patriots’ 11th shutout of the season.
The Pinecrest jayvee team is 7-0 in the conference and 12-0-2 overall after a 7-0 victory over Jack Britt.
The Patriot goals were scored by Morgan Maples (three), Andrea Pinchac, Kelly Guarante, Tricia Westmorland and Lisa Hopkins.
