DENIED OT, PATRIOT GIRLS TIE BULLDOGS
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 11th, 2005
Twice in the last 10 minutes of Wednesday’s soccer match, Pinecrest goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell was the only object standing between Terry Sanford’s Rachel Yepez and a tiebreaking goal.
Both times the Bulldogs’ all-state forward broke into the leftside of the Patriot penalty area and delivered a shot, Burwell made the save.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw with Yepez and the Patriots’ Kristen Anderson scoring first-half goals.
Coming on the heels of Monday’s 3-2 win at sixth-ranked Southeast Raleigh, the result puts the Patriots at 2-0-2. They should receive a good test again tonight when they entertain South View at 7 p.m.
The Patriots’ Latanya Cain had a breakaway opportunity with five minutes left in the match, but the whistles were silent even as she went crashing to the turf, with help, inside the Bulldog penalty area.
But causing Patriot coach Lorna Martin and her players just as much chagrin was not getting a chance to win the match in an overtime period. The Patriots were 4-2 winners in overtime at Terry Sanford last year.
“The referees wouldn’t let us play overtime,” Martin said, “because we didn’t agree to it before the game. It was disappointing. We played no where near the level we had been playing. Part of the reason might be that we have some injuries.”
With 2004 all-state player Lauren Broderick (knee) and Ann Fields (ankle) missing from the Patriot lineup, it took the visitors less than two minutes to get on the board, figuratively speaking (the scoreboard was not operational).
Yepez was the goal scorer, sending a Suzanne Ploeger corner kick into the net with a header. On a night that the Patriots produced very few shots with oomph, the tying goal by Anderson in the 28th minute was a fortuitous one.
The goal was set up by Katie Fields penetrating the Bulldog penalty area and winning a corner kick. Anderson’s low kick from the left flag traveled along the end line and somehow hooked around the near post into the goal — untouched by human feet.
After being out shot 8-2 in the first half, the Bulldogs had an 8-5 edge in the second, the most serious coming from the solo jaunts by the dangerous Yepez.
Burwell, a three-year starter and an all-region goalkeeper last year, talked about her approach in such situations.
“I just try to come out and cut down the angle,” the junior said, “and make sure she doesn’t have a lot of the goal to look at.
“It’s kind of thrilling when it’s one-on-one. The odds are pretty much against me — so when I make the save, it feels real good. I definitely wanted to go into overtime because I knew we could pull it off.”
Overtime periods are optional in non-conference matches. Terry Sanford, now 2-0-1, and South View are members of the Two Rivers Conference.
The Patriot junior varsity is also 2-0-2 after a 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs. They take on South View tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Scoring goals for the jayvees were Morgan Maples (three), Christina Consalvo, Sarah White and Lisa Hopkins. Contributing assists were Hopkins, Tricia Westmorland, Cally Blue and Courtney Broderick.
Goalkeepers Ashley Kerr and Megan Dann shared the shutout.
