Pinecrest girls’ soccer coach Lorna Martin noticed some extra nervousness in her players before they took the field at sixth-ranked Southeast Raleigh Monday night. Two hours later, the Patriots were celebrating a 3-2 victory. The winning goal was scored with about five minutes left in the game by Sara Cole. The senior midfielder was credited with assists on the other two Patriot goals by Latanya Cain and Katie Fields. The Patriots take a 2-0-1 record into tonight’s 7 p.m. home opener against another tough non-conference opponent in Terry Sanford. “They’ve got the skills and the fitness to compete with these teams — the rest is all mental,” Martin said, referring to some of her players’ early apprehension. “It was just a good hard-fought game.” Goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell came up big for the Patriots in a scoreless first half. Then in the second minute after the intermission, Cole took a corner kick from the right side. The ball bounced around in front of the goal a few times before Cain stuck it into the right corner of the net. About five minutes later, Cole connected with Katie Fields on the right side of the Bulldog goal. The junior turned and dribbled goal-ward before depositing the ball inside the far post for a 2-0 Patriot lead. Just past midway of the final period, the Bulldogs’ Becca Voss took advantage of a Patriot defensive lapse and scored on a solo effort. With about 15 minutes left in the match, Kelsey Roper tied it at 2-2 with a goal off of a corner kick. The play that produced the game-winner started with a throw-in by the Patriots’ Lora Smith about 30 yards from the Bulldog goal. Forward Molly Lynch got a head on it and Cole was there for the finish. “We were worried the game would end in a tie,” Martin said, “and they wouldn’t want to go to overtime like at Laney on Saturday. The last two minutes of the game seemed like 10 minutes.” After defeating Jacksonville 2-0 last Friday, the Patriots and Laney played to a 1-1 tie. Stacey Blanchard scored the Patriot goal on a direct kick. Both teams have to agree to play overtime in non-conference matches. The Bulldogs were ranked fourth in the North Carolina High School Coaches Association preseason poll before dropping to sixth after a loss to Wake Forest-Rolesville. The Pinecrest junior varsity improved to 1-0-2 with a 5-0 victory over Southeast Raleigh. Morgan Maples scored four times and Megan Dann once. Ashley Kerr was in the goal for the winners. <-Previous 3-5-05 at Laney (T, 1-1) 3-9-05 vs Terry Sanford (T, 1-1) Next-> |
