PINECREST GIRLS JUST KEEP ON ROLLING ALONG
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, May 5th, 2004
One of the nice things about Senior Night for the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team is that for a long time it has not been the team’s last home game.
This year’s four seniors — Anne Brannon, Jenny Fields, DeAnna Jackson and Lisa Southerland — will have the opportunity to play at least one more game at home as a high seed in the state playoffs beginning next week.
Monday night, the Patriots marked the occasion by waltzing by Seventy-First 13-0. Brannon carved herself a niche in the program’s record book with a hat trick and four assists. The Patriots will be heavily favored to complete a 20-0 regular season in a 6 p.m. match tonight at Douglas Byrd.
Southerland, who is one of about a dozen players in the 13-year history of the program to be a four-varsity player, says she thinks this is the closest-knit of the teams she has played on.
“It’s sad that it’s one of the last games I get to play with a lot of my friends,” she said after the game. “I’ve got some great friends on this team. I can’t picture playing with anybody but them.”
The Patriots, who wrapped up their seventh consecutive conference title last week (shared in 2001 with Scotland), took seven minutes to get on the board. Sara Cole sent a ball through the penalty area from the left wing, made a dash toward the goal, got a return pass from Brannon and blasted the ball through Falcon goalkeeper Brittany Milliken.
After Stephanie Carter connected off an assist by Allison Auman and Lauren Broderick finished a cross from Cole, Brannon had a hand in the next five goals the Patriots scored before halftime.
In the 19th minute, she put away a rebound off her own cornerkick making it 4-0. Six minutes later, Cole found the net again off a Brannon cornerkick. In the 31st minute, the Patriot forward controlled a short Falcon goal kick and connected from about 20 yards away. A minute later she fed Carter for a goal and then made it 8-0 finishing a pass from Broderick.
She called it a night after scoring for the third time in the first minute of the second half.
Brannon transferred to Pinecrest before her junior year and says she is glad she did. She earned all-conference honors in soccer as a freshman and sophomore at Richmond County and honorable mention last year with the Patriots. She was also the Mid-Southeastern Conference singles champion in tennis last fall. The big night gives her 17 goals and 13 assists this season.
“I think it was a good move,” she said of coming to Pinecrest,” because it’s been a lot of fun for soccer. And it’s more challenging academically here, too.”
Patriot coach Lorna Martin split the playing time about 50-50 between all her players. The only difference in the second half was that when the Patriots neared the Falcon penalty area, they usually veered east or west rather than attacking the goal. They often swung the ball all the way back to sweeper Mollyrose Milewski or goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell.
Ann Fields (two), Katie Fields and Megan Cole scored the other second-half goals. Burwell did not have to handle a shot as the Patriots recorded their 13th shutout. Milliken had 17 saves for the Falcons, now 1-11-1 in the conference and 1-14-2 overall.
All four of the Patriot seniors have made plans to attend college next year. Brannon is going to UNC-Chapel Hill. Southerland has not yet decided between UNC and Emory College in Atlanta. Jackson, a starter at the right back position, plans to attend Sandhills Community College.
Jenny Fields, one of the top-ranked students in her class, plans to study mechanical engineering at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She was also a member of the Pinecrest swimming team.
Before the game, public address announcer Mike Martin asked for a moment of silence for Luther Adams, a friend of Pinecrest sports, who passed away over the weekend. He was Stephanie Carter’s grandfather.
The Pinecrest junior varsity (15-0-1) registered its 15th shutout of the season in a 6-0 victory over the Falcons.
